Please use this thread to ask about a specific sound you are trying to create. Guidelines for asking: Make sure you have a clear example of the sound u want to recreate, don't just say the stab in this track, try to describe when it actually appears. Ask for help with one sound at a time. If you know how to help others with a sound, please do so. Try to use technical and musical language in your explanation of a sound as much as you are able. Soundcloud links are the most ideal solution. Keep it friendly! The intention behind this thread is to help others improve their music by participat ..read more

Suggestions for playing more gears together

Hi, I would like some suggestions regarding my next purchase. My set is currently a Moog Mother 32 and a Korg Volca Drum. I am playing industrial ambient/dark techno. Firstly, I would like to play them together and for that reason I'm considering three solutions: 1) a Behringer UMC404HD and use my laptop; 2) a mixer; 3) MPC one or a Roland SP404 mkii. I would prefer to play the instruments without using my laptop and softwares because I have Linux Ubuntu on it, and don't know if there are any for free. If you know any, can you suggest it to me? I recognise that the laptop would be a good solu ..read more

Does the 909 ride cymbal get overused?

Don't get me wrong. I still use them, and I love the sound. And I like people that do creative stuff with them, I tried to do that too. But are they getting overused now? Many professionally released tracks build to a moment where the 909 style ride crashes in to lift the intensity. I love the sounds Alarico is making with modular gear, and INB, for his "rides". Sounds much more interesting, and set his tracks apart. It's inspired me to look into getting a few modules: kick, noise and ride. I'm experimenting with white noise from vintage keyboards right now, heavily processed of course. subm ..read more

This might sound a little weird but how do you intruduce rides to a track so they sound like you are ”dropping” them in?

I’m fairly new to this city and always keen to meet now people. I’ve learned there is a wicked small techno scene here with some ace local DJs. There don’t seem to be so many producers though. Let me know if your in Bangkok or know of anyone making techno in the city! ?? submitted by /u/Working-Confusion-88 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Questions About Live Performance Sets

Hello all, this isn't so much production-focused as performance, so please point me in the right direction if it is not suited here. For those of you who perform live sets, I'm curious how much of it is pre-made songs (stuff you've already written that you're playing live) vs. completely on-the-fly stuff. I would love to get to the point of doing at least 1 hour live sets if not longer but it feels like either you need a huge body of work to get there or that a lot is just improv, the latter of which interests me a bit more. Would love to hear how you set up your set, also how long it took yo ..read more

Parallel processing without phasing

I like to distort my low end slightly and applying plugins like Devastor or Thermal directly to the drums ruin the transients usually. The obvious solution being parallel processing results in phasing no matter how I try and blend it. Should I be side-chaining the parallel channel to the kick? submitted by /u/AlbertBarese97 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Sound Design Plastikman EX + Prada Works

Hi everyone, I’m working on creating an audiovisual live show. I’ve been immersed in electronic music for 15 years, and a big Plastikman fan, though Hawtins recent works stood out for me as inspiration for their spheric colours and brilliant sound design. Very spacious, lush, clean, and crisp. I would love to know tips, tricks from the community on working towards these results, mainly regarding sound design. Maybe in detail tips on how to use reverb, creating these lush pads, crisp basslines, balance, separation, space, etc! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDBcxEMHNMs&t=1067s https://www ..read more

I'm a deep house/afro house producer getting into techno. I know some of the Detroit guys like Jeff Mills, Drexciya, and Floorplan, and I'm into dub techno stuff like DeepChord. I'm trying to blend those influences with what I already do. Any cool YouTube channels you all recommend for learning more about techno production and artists? submitted by /u/otiskanno [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
