Hello, I believe I have seen some discussion on the forum about adding water before dropping with smb - 2 or 3 times the acid volume? E.g. If I started with 250ML of HCL 61.45% and added 5ML of nitric acid 58%, should I add water to bring the total volume up to 510ML (255ML * 2)? And I'm also curious, what is the purpose of adding all that water? Thank you! Bill ..read more

Newbie here! I have done a successful batch of about 2 oz of silver from jewlery, cleaned, and melted this into a bar. It went great for my first try! So I decided to do the larger amount of silver jewlery I had about 480 g. I used water and about 300ml nitric acid. This time though I seem to have failed as the solution has turned foamy and a white powder has settled to the bottom. Hello I’m trying to use sodium nitrate + sulfuric acid to make 70% nitric acid. I understand the formula is a 2-1 mole = 1-2 mole nitric. But I can not get this to turn out right. If I add 1700 grams of sodium nitrate and 850 grams of sulfuric acid and 550 grams of water this should give me almost 2 liters of nitric acid but it’s not. Where I’m I going wrong here ..read more
