Hey everyone, I’ve been on a quest to find the most efficient way to help people in my country learn English, particularly when it comes to remembering both the spelling and pronunciation of words. One challenge I’ve encountered is that the letters in English words don’t always correspond directly to their pronunciation, making it tricky for learners to connect the dots or using memory technique. The real question is: Which memory method could help them remember both the letters and the pronunciations ? For instance, take the word “laugh.” Despite the presence of the letter “gh,” it’s pronounc ..read more

Hello all, I’m currently self studying Modern Standard Arabic with the intention to move into Classical Arabic. While I’ve read about the value of creating associations and capturing the sound and meaning of a word within a mnemonic image. I’ve even experimented with this with limited success, memorizing a short poem in Arabic using a memory palace. In the last week, I’ve been experimenting with creating associations by creating an image for new vocabulary from my Arabic studies. The issue, however, is that it can take me forever to come up with a satisfactory association, especially for short ..read more

Hey, I am looking to learn Egyptian Arabic because I would like to travel to Egypt. I want to be able to communicate efficiently with locals, police and make friends… Currently I found courses on Udemy that can help me learn Egyptian Arabic or through free videos on YouTube, however those YouTube videos don’t go into detail and only talk about general things. Does anyone have experience with taking courses to learn Egyptian Arabic? Some of those courses available on Udemy were made by foreigners… Anyone have experience with learning Egyptian Arabic? Greetings, Mat 2 posts - 2 participants Read ..read more

Hi I’ve used mnemonics in the (far) past for learning languages, A-Levels, etc, big fan, but I’m struggling to see the value in memory palaces. Taking the typical example in Spanish, beach (playa), and a player on the beach. sold, no problem seeing the value of that, but what extra benefit does a memory palace give you. I can just about see the example of seperate palaces for gender, but not for anything else Thanks Anthony 1 post - 1 participant Read full topic ..read more

Hey beautiful nerds! I posted a thing to r/LearningJapanese and got a pretty tepid response to a mnemonic system I made. Lots of “mnemomics don’t work for language learning” responses. Hopefully it helps someone here. I would love meaningful feedback on it, and what other kinds of things have worked for you. I has really helped me! Here is a link to the GSheet if you want a copy: Japanese PAO PUBLIC - Google Sheets Reddit link: Reddit - Dive into anything Reddit post text: I’ve been doing Duolingo for <80 days and, impatient to build vocab, started aggressively working on jpdb.io over the l ..read more

I got at least the basics of Dutch, English, Afrikaans, German, French and Japanese down. In 2024 I want to broaden my knowledge about languages by learning the basics (shopping, directions, describing my day) of a new language every month. What languages should I pick? Feel free to suggest any! 3 posts - 3 participants Read full topic ..read more

I just saw here a comment in which artificial intelligence was mentioned, and I used Edge’s Chat tool to create an exercise to learn a language. The result is not perfect, but it is very interesting. I included the request to use mnemonics, but I don’t think AI got the idea This is my input. Please create an exercise to learn Chinese, advanced level, about some scientific topic, it should include: text (generated by you, not from other source, no more than 300 Chinese characters, traditional Chinese, not simplified), vocabulary, some grammatical comments, and some mnemonic tricks to easily me ..read more

I’ve been looking through the Language Learning forum and on one of the posts it summarized what I have read - basically if I am using a memory palace, I can either organize it alphabetically or organize it by part of speech and concept and such. The post also said the first is generally better for reading, and the second better for speaking and writing. Nothing I have seen, however, suggests doing both at the same time - while I am speaking, I can generally use my memory town that relates to parts of speech, and while reading or listening, I can use the alphabetical one. Do you think this wou ..read more
