Hi. I’ve got a certain audio setup for several years now. I’m quite happy with it but I’m wondering if I could get better or similar quality with smaller and newer equipment. I’m not sure how much engineering / innovation happened in the several past years. I’m not sure how good (or bad) my gear is, especially the speakers. Can’t find much info about them online. Speakers: 2x Quadral AC 3100 AMP: Pioneer A-307R Cassette deck: Pioneer CT-656 TT: Audio Technica AT-LP5X (that’s a new TT) I’m wondering if it’s worth replacing the old amp and speakers with something newer and smaller. I still want ..read more

Hi, I have a Philips GA437 turntable that I’ve been trying to fix a buzzing noise on. It happens when the tonearm is lowered. The audio is extremely quiet and when I turn the volume on preamp up so it is audible, the static becomes louder. The static is in both channels. The static is affected/slightly changes when electronics plugged into the same circuit are turned on/off. Here are videos, pictures, and schematics: Things I’ve already tried: Replace the RCA cable, including the ground wire which I’ve attached to the ground post on the chassis base and also tried attaching it to a screw on a ..read more

Kenwood Stereo Control Amplifier Basic C2 & Stereo Power Amplifier M1

I brought these home from my parent’s place a couple of weeks ago. Dad purchased these new in 1984. He hasn’t used his stereo equipment in a very long time. Before I could really hook them up into my main rig, I had to tear them down to clean them up. These units have lived a life uncovered for 38 years getting full of dust, and worse, cigarette smoke/tar and whatnot. I bought some DeoxIT D5 and cleaning duster sprays. I do know that all of the potentiometers needed cleaning after a simple setup with small speakers. There was a lot of static in them. The DeoxIT also did a good job cleaning up ..read more

Onkyo A7 amplifier troubleshoot

Hello all, Looking for a little help troubleshooting an issue I’m having with a vintage Onkyo A7 amplifier my father gave me. I’m having an issue with the right channel. When I play music, the right speaker sounds very thin, like there is no low end. If I use the balance control on the amp and switch from full left to full right, it’s obvious I’m not getting full sounds out of the right speaker. The tweeter seems to be coming through fine though. When I swap the output wires, the issue follows, so I’ve ruled out the speaker being the issue. I’ve tried new rca cables that I know work and the is ..read more

Vintage Direct Drive Turntables

Wanted to see who out there had any experience with some of the classic direct drive turntables. Ive owned a mix of belt drives in the past but they ended up getting sold off for one reason or another. My two primary turntables consist of the classic Technics SL-1210 mk2 and a lesser known Technics SL-1100 turntable. I’ve often looked at models from other companies like Denon or Sansui which also have a solid line up of direct drives. It would be nice to hear what others are enjoying in this category. 4 posts - 3 participants Read full topic ..read more

I’m looking to get a tube or hybrid phonostage. What are your favorites under $1500? I don’t want to pay more than I did for the table. I’m looking for a list of really good ones that I can dig into, a list that is free of the Google answers, a list full of actual human experience based answers. 3 posts - 3 participants Read full topic ..read more

Kef LS50 Meta and Naim?

I have Kef LS50 Meta speakers, currently driven by a Harman Kardon HK6500 (1990, high current, 70 wpc). There is the opportunity to purchase a Naim NAC 102 and NAP 180 combination with Teddy Pardo TeddyCapPlus. How well will these play together? I will not have the opportunity to try them together beforehand. My main concern is whether the combination might end up too bright and fatiguing. Also, whether there is enough drive for the Metas. I’m looking for more detail in the lower end than I get with the Harman Kardon (which is a surprisingly excellent amp - I recently had a Musical Fidelity A3 ..read more
