These 11 beautiful babies have been in this morning for a worming appointment – that’s 101 dalmatians without the zero in the middle! The five girls and six boys were super chatty and got lots of attention as they waited on the front carpark. Well done mum Lily on delivering so many adorable, happy, healthy pups! If you find a baby bird …

It’s the time of year when baby birds are hatching, and we’ve seen a few practice recently that have been found outside their nest. It can be difficult to know when to intervene. Here’s advice taken from the RSPC website to help give baby birds found outside the nest the best chance of thriving. A bird with no feathers (a nestling) – needs to be replaced in the nest. If you can’t find the nest or it’s been damaged, it’s possible to fashion one from a plant pot or basket with nesting material inside. Then securely attach to the nearest tree. A baby bird with nearly all its feathers is called a ..read more

Compulsory microchipping for cats

Did you know that from 10th June 2024 it will be compulsory in England to have your cat microchipped? The new law will make it easier to reunite injured, lost or stray cats with their owners and will help to reduce the extent of common feline welfare issues such as abandonment. All cats need to be microchipped by this date, with the only exception being feral cats. Kittens must be microchipped before they reach 20 weeks old thereafter. Contact details are stored, and must be kept current, on a government-approved pet microchipping database to ensure owners are easily traceable should cats nee ..read more

Protect against these nasties!

This is a flea larva we took from a cat earlier this week. We were able to watch it wiggle about and raise its head to the lens under our microscope. It must have known we were taking photos! Fleas love the warmer weather that Spring brings, and now is the time that dormant flea eggs from last year are starting to hatch outdoors. Adult fleas will hop onto passing pets for a tasty meal, return back with them and make their home in pet bedding as well as in your carpets and soft furnishings where they will lay lots more eggs that will hatch into this! Fleas can cause a range of problems for our ..read more

Superstar Scout!

A big shout out to our amazing superstar weight loss champion Scout who was in to see us this week and has reached his optimum target weight of just over 30kg! Massive congratulations! Scout started on a controlled weight loss programme with our lead nurse Cody last summer after reaching a peak weight of 37.5kg and a body condition score of 7/9. Body condition scoring (bcs) is a great way of identifying whether pets are in optimum condition as the system assesses how much fat there is in specific parts of a pet’s body rather than looking at weight alone. A dog’s optimum bcs is around 5/9 and ..read more

Treacle, the mummy of this gorgeous baby, was brought in to see us as she had become weak and unwell and her owner was worried she might have eaten something she shouldn’t. The problem was actually that Treacle’s puppies had been depleting her calcium supplies when feeding and it was a calcium deficiency that was making Treacle poorly. In addition to giving Treacle treatment, we gave her a bit of a break (and lots of cuddles!) and fed the five adorable dachshund babies by hand. We’re delighted to report that mum has recovered brilliantly and puppies are all growing apace! The post A helping h ..read more

Many of you will already have met or spoken with Laura Newell, the newest member of our 387 Vets and West Midlands Cat Clinic reception team. Laura joined us in February, coming directly from the customer care team at a Midlands-based veterinary referral centre. Whilst she enjoyed being the first port of call for attending owners and pets, she really missed her previous first opinion practice experience and in particular, the opportunity to get to know regular clients, to meet people’s pets and to see them on repeat visits as they move through their various life stages. Laura has 12 years’ cu ..read more
