Barre comes from a technique created by Lotte Berk, a Jewish dancer who escaped Nazi Germany and re-located to England. It was in England that she created her movement technique that later became the foundation for the barre workout. Berk derived the method from her dance training and as a method to heal a lower back injury. She first introduced the pelvis tilt, which she invented after a doctor recommended that she curve her lower back during exercise. She called it the, “love-making position.” Witty and Charming she was straightforward and seriously understood the body. (source). The Lotte B ..read more

As a dancer, I love to challenge my body, but years’ worth of dance training has caused me to have a couple of injuries and alignment issues. Because of this, I used to avoid other forms of exercise because I would fear injuring myself even more. But barre has not only strengthened me in places where I am injured, but it also has made me feel stronger overall and has allowed me to exercise more. So, here are my top 5 Barre Vida positions and why they have helped me become stronger. 5. Second Position Plié Second Position Plie is a great way to work your adductors and quadriceps. This past year has had unique challenges for everyone. Whether it’s shifting to virtual learning, working from home, taking dance/fitness classes online or socially distanced in a studio, or other changes, we have all made life adjustments we never thought we’d have to do. For me, a young adult that graduated college during a pandemic, I’ve had to make a lot of life adjustments that I’m still figuring out to this day. It’s hard having a work-life balance when I’m thinking about what’s happening in the world as well as my present and future.  One thing I’ve really had an issue with is taki ..read more

What is the first image that pops into your mind when you think of a Barre class? I have to admit, when I first heard that term, I saw a literal ballerina. A girl in a pink tu-tu, with her hair in a bun, pink ribbon flowing down, pink ballet point slippers and pink tights... that was rather stereotypical of me! Rude too. I reluctantly took a Barre class, "knowing" full well I wasn't going to like it, because after all, I am NOT a ballerina, nor have I ever been. I never even had any interest in dance or ballet. So obviously, this class was NOT going to be for me. I dragged myself in the room ..read more

I was given an awesome opportunity to execute a training for my barre instructor certification through Barre Vida via Jo Stone.    This online certification is a 40 hours training that is collapsed down into three sections with four lessons in the first section and two-three lessons in section two and three.  There are sections you are required to teach and video tape it, and then upload in the discussion posting area.  You take someone else’s posted lesson, ask questions and contribute feedback. I like not having to worry about finding music to suit the proper beats ..read more

Danielle, a current student enrolled in the online course. What made you decide to do a barre certification? The blend of Ballet and Pilates has interested me for a while now. The grace and strength that comes from these two forms is incredible. This is my chance to become a part of this movement. How has Movement been a part of your life? I have always loved to dance. I was not into fitness growing up. The only way I would consider movement was through dance. When I was in my late 20s I started appreciating fitness when I was introduced to dance fitness classes. That interest then expanded ..read more
