Nope. No Dance Experience. Not a Dancer…   This is my automatic response when people ask me if I have a dance background. I lie and say no, because the fact is, I never felt like a dancer.  I started with ballet at age 5, and I don’t remember it all, but pictures have me looking happy enough. I tried tap as well, but eventually settled into something called modern jazz. I loved going to dance classes.  A bunch of my friends went, the teachers were always young and fun, the music was good – it was generally a good time. I loved the drills, the repetition, and moving my body to th ..read more

Is it Safe to Go Back to the Gym?
Groove Barre Blog
by Dayna Callaway

I’d love to be able to answer that question definitively, but the truth is, I can’t.  What I can do is share some articles with you, and the opinions of health experts. I can also share with you what I’m doing at Groove Barre to support our joint safety.  And I’ll share this with you too: I’m afraid to get it wrong. The worst thing that could happen is to have an outbreak traced back to our studio, so I’m doing every thing in my power to prevent that from happening. Here’s an article from the Toronto Star, that addresses this very question. The article points out that gyms have been ..read more

True and shocking confessions and a do-over!
Groove Barre Blog

I am officially calling a do-over.  COVID-19 blazed through my house, and each member of my family was a testament to what a weird and freaky lottery COVID is. The youngest in the house (15) had cold like symptoms, one of my sons tested positive but had no symptoms, Mr. Groove Barre had flu-like symptoms for 3 days, and I had a cold coupled with breathlessness for over 2 weeks. My cardio is still suffering one month later. The only thing that made me feel remotely better was chocolate. And chips. And snacks in general. There was a lot of snacking going on. And lying around trying not to ..read more

What the heck is barre, anyway?
Groove Barre Blog

What is barre, and more importantly, is it effective?   Barre is a mash-up of ballet, Pilates and yoga. Still confused? Let’s break that down. The ballet part can be a show-stopper, non-starter, hard no, no can do, don’t wanna do, forget tabout it, all around NO for many people. Let me try to put your mind at ease. We just take some positions and movements from ballet, and incorporate them into our workout. We use the barre for support to get a killer leg workout. But we’re not dancing. The first 15 minutes of the workout are similar to other muscle conditioning classes you may have don ..read more

There is an expression that is so appropriate for fitness:  move it or lose it.  Well intentioned sports therapists or doctors sometimes recommend complete rest for an injury, and then more bad things happen.  Nowadays, the advice is often to keep it moving. The latest research on sprains has us up and about within 2 days beginning to gently use the injured area, allowing for a gradual progressive improvement in the joints ability to support weight or move without discomfort.[1] The most common type of knee pain is caused by osteoarthritis or arthritis.  Doctors recommend ..read more
