This past year was a big one for Luke’s, as we celebrated wins within our business, our team, and in our communities. We are very proud of the nearly 50 teammates who were promoted, the 31 new jobs we created, and the three new shacks we opened across the country!  But perhaps the most exciting award bestowed on us this year was being voted the Best Lobster Roll in Portland, ME, by residents of our hometown city! We are honored to carry this title, and will of course continue to shout it from the rooftops from East Coast to West Coast. Making Lobster More Inclusive After an exciting firs ..read more

Juneteenth at Luke's
Luke's Lobster

Every year on June 19th we honor Juneteenth; the day in 1865 when freedom was proclaimed for all enslaved people, even though the Emancipation Proclamation came two years before that. Juneteenth is often overlooked in our nation's history so today at Luke's we want to take some time to highlight a couple ways that we are reflecting on this important day. Earlier this month we launched a new cocktail called the Sea Smoke (more on that later) at our flagship restaurant in Portland, Maine as well as at our Grand Central Terminal location. The key ingredient in the cocktail is a hibiscus liqueur c ..read more

The Federal Budget Bill & Maine Lobster
Luke's Lobster
by Meaghan Dillon

We commend the compromise language passed as part of the federal budget bill to better protect both the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, and the lobster fishery that’s critical to Maine’s coastal communities. We’re glad to know that the areas where we source lobster, which rigorous scientific study by third parties have shown are not causing harm to right whales, will not be unfairly targeted. We’re also excited that there will be funding for scientific study and gear innovation that will help restore the right whale population in the future. This intervention was necessary to fix a brok ..read more

Our Response to Maine Lobster MSC Certification
Luke's Lobster

November 16, 2022 Transparency is one of our core values, and in light of the recent suspension of Maine lobster's MSC certification due to a legal technicality, we want to provide our guests with clear and accurate information. The Marine Stewardship Council, known as MSC, is an internationally-recognized certifying body for sustainable fisheries. Not all sustainable fisheries are MSC certified, certification requires resources many fisheries lack, but certification is required by some large seafood buyers, so it affects lobstermen’s ability to sell their catch.  In Spring of 2022 ..read more

Tulsa Race Massacre
Luke's Lobster
by Meaghan Dillon

After World War I, the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma emerged as a thriving center of successful Black-owned businesses. With a population of 10,000, the neighborhood boasted beautiful homes, commercial buildings, offices, and churches. It was so prosperous it became known as “Black Wall Street.” On May 31, 1921, what started as a standoff between a white lynch mob and black citizens attempting to protect a wrongly-accused man, turned into an all-out massacre of Greenwood. In the early morning hours of June 1, the white mob burned 35 blocks to the ground, destroying over 1,200 homes ..read more
