The Sawtooth Ridge 50M/50K is less than a month away, and we have three quick updates to share. If any questions come to mind, let us know.  Snowly cow! We are thrilled to report that the Cascades are holding a ton of snow. A deep, late-season snowpack in the Sawtooth Backcountry is a good thing. But it could make for some spicy conditions on race day. There is a strong possibility that 50M and 50K runners will traverse snow at a few points along the course. Poles and sunscreen will be your friend. Trail maintenance this weekend A handful of us will be on the course this weekend, performi ..read more

Runners, We’ll start with great news: The Forest Service wants us to use the original course now that the Soda Lake fire is 100% contained. We can all pretend the past eight days didn’t really happen… Now for some important pre-race reminders. Buckle up for along email! The “final-final” course GPX is coming on August 16th We will publish the “final-final” course GPX file to our website by Monday, August 16th at 8:00pm MT. Runners, Thanks for your continued patience as we wrangle with the Soda Lake fire and potential changes to the course. We have encouraging news — but not yet a definitive course. Before we dig into the details, let me emphasize that we have zero indication that the race will not happen. The Forest Service and our other partners have been and remain 100% committed to the inaugural running of the Wyoming Range 100. Okay, on to the details. The closure order has been mostly rescinded On the positive front, the Forest Service rescinded most of the closure order on&nbs ..read more

Runners, During our pre-race call, we talked about a fire that started last Wednesday and, at the time, was relatively small — about 40 acres. Since then, the "Soda Lake" fire has grown to approximately 100 acres, and the Forest Service has ordered a closure of the surrounding area for the month of August. The closure impacts three aid stations and about 20 miles of the course. Here is how we're thinking about the situation. What's happening with the fire? The Soda Lake fire started last Wednesday and had a strong and quick response from firefighting entities. EVENT CANCELED DUE TO HEAT Runners – We’ll rip off the band-aid right away: We are canceling the 2021 Sawtooth Ridge 50M this weekend. Stated simply, it’s too hot. The National Weather Service extended their excessive heat warning through 7:00pm PT on Sunday, and the forecast is still calling for triple-digit temperatures on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. As of this email, the high in Methow on Saturday is, depending on which website you visit, ranging from 103 to 107.  Please know that we did not make this decision lightly. Throughout the weekend, we explored a variety of alternatives, in ..read more

Sawtooth Ridge 50M: 2021 runner update #3: POTENTIAL RACE CANCELATION
Everlong Endurance Blog
by Denis Cook

Runners –  Since our email update yesterday, the National Weather Service upgraded their heat advisory to an excessive heat warning. Here is an excerpt: “Unprecedented triple-digit heat” will result in “one of the most extreme and prolonged heat waves in the recorded history of the Inland Northwest.” Considering the exceptionally remote nature of our course – there’s only one vehicle-accessible aid station after mile 8.3! – we believe that hosting the race during a heat warning presents undue risk to our runners and volunteers, and potentially burdens local emergency services that could o ..read more
