Hi again! For this blog I’m going to go a bit more into extra-curricular activities and uni life outside of vet school. As our timetable is a bit more full on than some other subjects, it can be easy to slip into everything in your life being about vet school – sometimes it’s nice to get away from it all! Everyone is different, so the most important this is that you are enjoying yourself. In this post I am going to talk about what a few of my friends and I do in our spare time, but in ~interview~ form to make it easier to read! Are you part of any clubs? L: I am part of the main university ..read more

Rural Campus vs City Living

Hi! I’m Kallie, and I’m a second-year student on the 5-year programme. Some of the most common questions I get are all about how studying at a rural campus works, where students live, and our engagement with students on other courses on the main campus. I thought this blog would be a good opportunity to share how this works for most students! Most students tend to live in the city of Edinburgh itself. The Easter Bush campus is served by 3 main bus routes, which run up both up the East and West corridors of the city. The majority of students tend to choose flats and student accommodation along ..read more

Hiya! I’m Kallie, and I’m a second year student on the 5-year programme. I thought I would share a little bit about study methods at vet school, as it can be difficult to know where to start! Before starting vet school, I gave a lot of thought to how I was going to cope with the step up from school to university- in particular, how I planned to go about note-taking, study methods, and revision. Throughout A-levels, I spent hours creating beautiful pages of notes, which, when it came to revision, I almost completely ignored! I knew I needed to find a new, more time-efficient, and more effective ..read more

Student Life in and around Edinburgh

One key attraction of picking Edinburgh over other vet schools was how much I loved the city itself and how I could see myself living and exploring the stunning surroundings here. During my past 4 years living in Edinburgh, I have fallen in love with both the city and the people. Whilst the vet course does take up a fair chunk of my time as a student, it is very important to step outside of the course and enjoy life as a student whilst it lasts.  I thought I would use this blog post to share some of my favourite parts of Edinburgh and beyond. Stockbridge – One of my favourite places in Ed ..read more

Wildlife and Exotics in Edinburgh Vet Programme

Hiya! I’m Anna, a fourth-year vet student at R(D)SVS on the 5 year programme. I’m here to tell you some tips about how to get involved in wildlife and exotics work whilst at vet school, but first let me tell you a little bit about myself. I grew up in London and came to Edinburgh in 2020 to study veterinary medicine. My journey wasn’t the classic route; I hadn’t been on a farm until my first placement and hadn’t had any pets! I was originally drawn to human medicine after watching Grey’s anatomy… but after doing my first lambing placement, where I got so involved in the entire process and had ..read more

Hello again! My name is Lauren and I am in my first year of the GEP program in the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. I am originally from California and moved to Edinburgh in the beginning of August this year. Moving to Scotland has been such an exciting adventure for me, as living abroad was a lifelong dream of mine. But getting here was a bit of a challenge. The scariest part of moving abroad was going through the process of getting a student visa. If you plan to study abroad at any point in your life, you will probably have to go through the visa process. In talking to my classmate ..read more

Hey guys! It’s me again writing a blog post, and I hope you’ve been doing well! Just as a refresher, my name is Abbey and I’m a first-year student in the GEP programme. We’re currently in our revision week before exams, and a few weeks away from the Christmas holidays! I thought I’d share some of the revision tips I found helpful whilst being a vet student throughout the semester! 1. Reading slides before lectures Before a lecture, I try to spend 5 minutes beforehand just to skim through the slides/ notes given to us online. I found that this helps me to have a general idea about what topics w ..read more

Extra-mural studies in preclinical years (1-2 years)

Hi again! My final blog is going to be about the extra-mural studies (EMS) in my first two years of vet school. I get a lot of EMS-related questions, so hopefully sharing my experiences would be useful for you. From this year onwards, we need to do a total of 12 weeks of animal handling EMS placements. And I finished all my placements in my first year so that I get to enjoy my full holidays in 2nd year, but scheduling EMS is completely dependent on you. Some people prefer to spread out their placements in the first 2 years. You do not need to worry too much about finding a placement by yourse ..read more

How I feel about Edinburgh as an international student
Stories from Vet School

Hi guys, I am back with another blog post! In this post, I want to talk about how I feel about Edinburgh as an international student. Just to briefly talk about my background, I am from South Korea but lived almost half of my life abroad. The two countries I lived in were India and Russia! So even before coming, I was used to living somewhere different from my home country. The first thing I want to talk about is the weather. As you might expect, Edinburgh is a city located quite up north so it tends to be windier throughout the winter. And we sometimes get many kinds of weather in one day; t ..read more
