(?Christmas Countdown⛄) SONG OF THE DAY The Gurus – Blue Snow Night

Formed at the peak of the psychedelic era, The Gurus were an American band that emerged with the promise of great things, but never made it past one album! Known for their pioneering and experimental sounds, they were among the first bands to incorporate Middle Eastern influences into their music, giving their sound an exotic edge! Sadly, the band broke up without making a large impact on the music scene at the time, but did manage to release two singles on United Artists Records in 1966 and 1967. Released via United Artists, today’s song was backed with Come Girl in 1966, followed a the foll ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY The Naturals – The Hook

How absolutely excited am I to be sharing this little smasher with you today!! This song sounds like it was recorded in someone’s garage (I guess that’s why they called it garage rock) and that is exactly what I LOVE about this!! In all its unpolished, raw glory, this is just perfect as it is!! Hark at those drums as they shuffle along, the glistening crispness of the cymbals offsetting that bass groove as it rocks out a mighty beat!! The guitar just makes me shiver in all the right ways and the vocals sound like they have come from another planet (or maybe just another room) but it echo’s ou ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY The Mebusas – Song of Mr Bulldog

Even though this track was pressed on a respectably large label, the band themselves are something of a relative mystery. Coming together in the early 1970’s, The Mebusas hailed from Nigeria. A multitalented collective of about five musicians (I think?), the band were known to fuse elements of soul, funk and psych-rock together with Latin, Caribbean and African flavours. What came out, as I’m sure you will guess, was a full-bodied sound, satisfying to most taste (ear) buds who are partial to that certain ‘funky-soul-world-mix’. Song of Mr Bulldog (not to be confused with another well-known nu ..read more

Known for creating some wonderfully eclectic music compilations, Madrid’s Munster Records have recently released their latest instalment ….and this is where you can find today’s song! After three previous volumes in their Algo Salvaje series, their new record explores the “darkest, neglected and rebellious side of Peruvian 60s garage beat”. “Algo salvaje” is an anthology devoted to a rich period when hundreds of bands started to emerge from all over the world, inspired by what their US and British contemporaries were doing. Through this avenue and plenty of their own experimentation and ..read more

It always brings me immeasurable joy when I hear a song for the first time and instantly love it! Sometimes I just know from the moment a song starts that I’m going to like what’s coming next…. and I wasn’t wrong about today’s song when I thought just that! Mother’s Tin Moustache is one of the most memorable psych tracks I’ve heard in a while and I’m not just talking about its name! This song is blissfully bonkers and very cool for so many reasons; where do I start!? I love the way the song opens with that pulsing tribal beat, it gets you instantly! Then there’s those bonkers, mad-wacky vocal ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Ultimate Spinach – (Ballad of) The Hip Death Goddess

Though their lifespan may have only been a relative musical blink in the grand scheme of things, Ultimate Spinach were one of Boston’s answers to the San Francisco scene. At the peak of the psychedelic era, many bands started to emerge from the “Bosstown Sound”, which was a marketing campaign launched as a regional attempt to compete with the “San Francisco Sound”. Among these bands came Ultimate Spinach and I would wager every penny I have that they could give any San Francisco band a run for their money! Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, this band emerged in 1967 and were gone by 1969. Du ..read more

Oh wow!! This song makes you feel like you have slept walked into a street full of fire crackers and then woke up!! Its crazy, the vocals are insane and it’s a frenzy of sound….I love it!! The ear-feast that is Planetário came about when Brazilian artists Alceu Valença & Geraldo Azevedo teamed up in 1972 to release their self-titled debut album. This song featured alongside 11 other psych-tinged tracks and constructed what is considered a pioneering record! Alceu Valença is a poet/musician/composer known and celebrated for his musical fusions of traditional Brazilian music and modern pop ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY David Clayton Thomas And The Shays – Send Her Home

Smooth as silk and like a coaxing stroke to the inner ear, this is just the pace for me today.  This track really is a delight in all its unhurried glory. The drums roll like gentle thunder, heralding a storm that is yet to come, but all is still quiet in this moment. Lush keys adorn the bluesy melody like a posh belt, holding it all together, whilst vocals are hushed (and for some reason keep making me think of Dusty Springfield) and oh-so-elegant.  Send Her Home was written by Canadian singer-songwriter David Henry Thomsett, better known as David Clayton-Thomas. Issued in 1965, it ..read more

Hailing from Lima and coming together in the late 1960’s, The Saint Thomas Pepper Smelter were a psych-rock outfit that formed from the ashes of Los Shain’s (1963-68). Named after (a combination of) The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club and a bar in Lima, their garage rock sounds extended of several 45’s and one LP. Led by Gerardo Manuel and later joined by Freddy Macedo on organ, their material consisted of cool covers and original compositions. Influenced by The Beatles, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Iron Butterfly, Cream, Blind Joe Reynolds and Classics IV, they also covered songs fr ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Les Rallizes Dénudés – Wilderness of False Flowers

Les Rallizes Dénudés are a very interesting band that formed in 1967 by a group of students at Kyoto’s Doshisha University. Led by the enigmatic frontman, Takashi Mizutani they were a group true to their own beliefs and had initially set out to record in a studio, but ditched that idea. After being dissatisfied with the results of their studio recordings, they later agreed only to exclusively play live shows. Their career spanned over many years, albeit disjointed, and lasted from 1967-1988 originally, and then again briefly between 1993 and 1996 – after that they disbanded permanently. The l ..read more
