Hi After dad died, mum wanted to transfer her house into my name to avoid hassle after she goes (probably after me, and its no issue for me, but she insisted) We have done all this, and its going to be finished soon (with a clause that she can live there until death and sell and rebuy when she wants), but we didn't think about her house insurance Will it be any problem for her to insure the house although the house is in my name, given that I am a permanent resident in PT? I will ask insurance company (although they have a vested interest in profits) and research (although this is getting hard ..read more

Hi, My fuse box with 2 sets of 1 RCB with 9 overload breakers, totalling 2 RCB’s and 18 breakers….has a very intermittent trip on one of the RCB’s and sometimes the other RCB trips too. I’ve done megga checks with each L and N to earth over the past year but in conclusion a faulty circuit/s still exists somewhere. It drives me crazy when it trips….and whilst rainy weather is a clue it does trip even with dry weather. So the solution, albeit costly, is installing 18 RCBO’s ie RCB with combined overload so when the offending circuit leaks to earth I’ll know which one when it trips but hopefully ..read more

Hi all, I know this is not the place to get professional advice, but I am just doing some research prior to getting professional advice. I am UK resident but have a property in Portugal. I am wondering whether I should gift my property in Portugal to my children now, hope I survive more than 7years so that it is outside my UK estate when I go thus avoiding UK IHT. I am thinking that in Portugal as they are my children there is no tax to pay. Anyone out there able to share what they know. Thanks ..read more

I received a new bank card in the mail yesterday which was accompanied by a letter which I think gave instructions on how to activate the card. As usual with such things I opened the Google Translate app on my phone to follow the instructions but was puzzled when the language said Portuguese (Brazil) to English. I changed the language to European Portuguese but when I then tried to translated the page there was an error message saying it could not translate in this language. Wow! I tried the Brazilian one but it was half gobbledegook so gave up. I will just go to the bank this morning and get ..read more

All; Can anyone recommend a financial advisor, algarve preferably. Searching online and through the AFPOP connect list, I find some troubling links; like one with an address in a residence that is also the address of a financial company that has "stopped trading". Another who has an advisor who was director of Premier FX (which collapsed after pilfering client funds). I was recommended to a person who wanted to have a zoom meeting; I said I prefer face to face at his office. He told me he has no office. It seems like the water is full of sharks, and we're the small fish! Any specific warnings ..read more

I cannot seem to get a straight answer to my question so I am hoping some clever person on here can! For the last few years we have paid no tax, our only taxable income came from a small pension of £2969 my wife receives but it is well below the €4104 allowance. Last year I cashed in £5889 from a personal pension so I knew we would owe some tax but can anybody tell me which of the following calculations are correct? Combined pensions 8858 Less combined allowance of 8208 = 650 10% of 650 = 65 tax bill. Or Wifes pension below allowance so no tax My pension 5889 Less 4104 allowance = 1785 10% of ..read more

According to the Resident, a lot of the ex-SCUT Tolls will cease as from January 1st 2025. Included in this for me anyway is the A22 across the width of the Algarve. I am delighted with this as the EN 125 gets crowded at times. I have not pasted the article from the newspaper incase of any copyright issues To read more see The Resident Web site ..read more
