I thought it may be useful to look at various locations that may help inspire you as I am aware not everyone has a beautiful backdrop at their yard; more often than not clients have fields with lots of visible wire fencing, neighbouring buildings or other elements in the background that you would rather not have in your portrait session. Being based in East Sussex we are spoilt with some perfect locations… from the dramatically beautiful South Downs to the atmospheric Ashdown Forest and the striking coast at the many horse-friendly beaches along the Sussex coast. I was lucky enough to be able to join the Coakham Bloodhounds for an evening beach ride recently. There was a huge variety of different horses and ponies to photograph. It was fantastic to see such a large group of riders enjoying the thrills of the beach. You can see the full set of images and purchase prints here: https://ponyportrait.pixieset.com/coakhambloodhoundsbeachride/?fbclid=IwAR1rWSnlc7lcDmXz6kSjGCHWsA2mmKiye_hCcdfvelVdXhP0GA4peUOMum4 ..read more

It has been a busy few months for our sponsored rider, India Piper-Dadswell; with trips to Europe and around the UK to competitions, but we were very lucky to catch her for an update on how the season is going for her so far… “Valkenswaard (The Netherlands) was a great experience for both the ponies and me. The courses were a lot more technical and they were built stronger than the courses in England. I thought the ponies would do well and I knew that Shelby would cope with the atmosphere. Millie is a new ride for me and therefore i wasn’t sure how she would cope. Both ponies performed to th ..read more

Sometimes life throws a few challenges our way but if we can overcome them, the rewards make it all worthwhile. This was my first two-hour equine photography session after the first lockdown. It was challenging to start again after a long break but this first session was with friends making it so much easier for me. There is no denying that it was a challenging session in so many ways, not just because it was the first I did since the first lockdown in 2020, but also because it is difficult trying to keep your distance when working with children and their ponies. Nothing really went to plan, b ..read more

It has been a fantastic start to the new season however it was sadly cut short by the corona virus! Before we were on lockdown I had the chance to go to two winter premier shows with Shelby. After a good start at Arena UK with a placing and clear in the 1.20, it set us up perfectly for Bury Farm - my last Winter premier on ponies. It was mostly exciting as my new ride Paddy was joining Shelby in competing over the two days however Shelby was due to step up a level to 1.30 in the JA winter classic which is a class where only the top ponies in the country compete. Shelby jumped incredible from ..read more

It is a good time to be experimenting. Sometimes the light or the bright colours can distract from the subject of the image and I find that reverting to black and white allows me to focus on different aspects. I associate black and white with newspapers so often it seems to work for me when the images are telling a story. This is Oscar’s visual story of a riding lesson on Arthur ..read more
