The Port of Oakland handled 174,482 TEUs in April slightly increased compared to 170,268 TEUs in March. March’s total cargo volume through Oakland was also larger than February’s throughput at 153,837 TEUs. Empty exports rose 21.6%, handling 24,754 TEUs this April in contrast to 20,365 TEUs in April 2022. Empty imports declined 8.9%, with 16,395 TEUs transiting the port versus 17,993 TEUs in April 2022, while loaded exports fared better, experiencing a dip of 3.9%, with 63,193 TEUs transiting port facilities, compared to 65,782 TEUs in April 2022. 2M cuts Tokyo from USWC service as Japanese exports fade

In another sign of declining cargo volumes to and from Japan, the 2M Alliance of MSC and Maersk has cut Tokyo from its Far East-US West Coast TP8 service. Maersk Line's customer advisory stated that removing Tokyo, which was the first Asian port of call for the service, aimed to "provide customers with efficient and reliable service". The 13,568 TEU Maersk Edmonton is now en route from Oakland and will be the first vessel to exclude Tokyo and start the TP8's Asian rotation in Qingdao on 12 June. Berth 8, which will be built in stages, will significantly increase the Manila International Container Terminal's (MICT's) capabilities to accommodate ultra-container vessels of up to 18,000 TEUs. The new berth will provide 400 metres of quay and 120,000 m² of yard area, bringing an extra yearly capacity of 200,000 TEUs at the major box terminal of the Philippines.
