The Derivative Self

I think that very few of us know what really makes us happy. Now, I don’t mean this as some grand philosophical question on the essence of happiness. But I wonder how many of us could genuinely say what we are interested in or what we enjoy. Not things we think we should enjoy, or things our parents want us to enjoy, or things that make us money, or things we are good at, or things that allow us to present a particular image of ourselves to the world. But, in the purest, most true sense, what are the things that bring us happiness, regardless of any other considerations they bring? It seems li ..read more

Thoughts on (Dis)connected & reimagining our online conversation

I read (and absolutely loved!) Emma Gannon’s (Dis)connected this past weekend. It’s a perceptive book about how to remain human in an increasingly online world, without completely cutting out your connection to the virtual. I’ve been following and enjoying Emma’s work for years – her conversational, approachable writing style combined with some truly thought-provoking topics always makes for wonderful reading and reflection, and (Dis)connected was no exception. (Dis)connected had a lot of insightful nuggets on online discourse. Reflecting on the growth of the influencer economy, Emma writes ..read more

The perfect morning routine doesn’t exist

Imagine the perfect morning routine. You wake up without an alarm, feeling refreshed. You take some deep breaths, sit up, and drink a glass of water. You grab a pretty notebook from your bedside table to do some journaling, or your phone to do a 10 minute meditation – or perhaps that comes after you’ve put on a fluffy robe and made yourself a cup of green tea or a matcha. You open your curtains to enjoy some moments of natural sunlight on your face, before making your bed and proceeding to your bathroom to do a full morning skincare routine, involving cleansers, toners, serums, scrubs, moistur ..read more

A horses and politics blog

When I was a teenager, I had a Tumblr blog that focused on two things: horses and politics.  This theme, if one can even call it a theme, may seem odd to you, but was absolutely natural to me at the time. When I was 10 years old, I had a free weekend to fill, so my mum took me for my first horse riding lesson and I fell in love with the animals and the sport. There weren’t many ‘horse girls’ at my school, so my passion was largely confined to online forums, and badgering my parents to buy me more horse books. When I was a bit older, I started getting more serious about my studies, and beg ..read more

Do you ever wish you just had an extra hour, day, or week in your life? Just so you could stop feeling so rushed all the time. Extra time to catch up on your sleep and finally get to those little niggly emails and tasks and chores that have been piling up for weeks. I’ve fantasized about this extra time in the past, how it could calm me down and stop making me feel like I’m behind on life all the time. Believe it or not, but I’ve recently received that magical week of extra time. A few days ago my university announced that they were going to push back the start of the upcoming semester by a we ..read more

Mess up your personal brand just a little

It feels like everyone has a ‘personal brand’ these days. As social media seeps further and further into our lives, it becomes harder to exist without an online presence, and hence without an online identity. But unlike your actual, physical self, which can be tired and moody, wear frumpy outfits, and make jokes that no one laughs at, your online self can always be the best version of you. Compared to our actual identity. we have a much greater ability to shape and control our online identity, which brings us almost naturally to the rise of personal brands. Personal branding is an industry of ..read more

Resolutions for a happier 2022

I am not ashamed to admit that I am one of those people that buys a gym pass in January only to stop going after a few weeks. I love the energy of a New Year. It’s exciting to plan for how this year will be better than the last, even though I am guaranteed to break every single one of my resolutions. There are many articles covering the discrepancy between the exhilaration of visualizing a ‘New Year, New Me’ life through resolutions and the drudgery of actually doing the work to achieve the vision. We all know we need to be breaking up our resolutions into small, achievable goals, tracking our ..read more

Don’t keep your New Year’s Resolutions
Quarter-Life Crisis Blog

I’m a sucker for New Year’s resolutions. As someone with the attention span of a literal goldfish, I can never be bothered with reflecting on the past year or full-on life reorganization, but New Year’s resolutions are my jam. Furtively scribbling in my journal, or rather less meditatively typing into my notes app on my phone on public transport on my way to somewhere, there’s nothing I love more at the end of December than devising a list of everything I need to do to be a better human and live a better life in the New Year.  This ritual consistently involves a small group of goals that ..read more
