Hi all, Would love to get your thoughts on the best RAID type for video editing off a NAS system. I just purchased a QNAP TVS-h874-i5-32G 8 Bay NAS, which I will be populating with 14TB WD Red Pro drives. I anticipate needing a lot of storage for my project, around 100TB… the end goal is to work remotely with other editors in assembling the footage. All of the footage is and will be backed up multiple times to other archival hard drives. I’ve heard conflicting things about RAID 5 vs RAID... Read more ..read more

Slowness with samba using Proxmox & Ubuntu

I’m fairly new to Proxmox so maybe this is well known. But by adding VirtIO RNG changing the bytes to unlimited or something high has surprisingly helped Samba from hangs. I think this might be to do with SMB3 and cryptography it was running out of /dev/random pool, could be mistaken and it’s placebo I’m not sure. Samba behaves frequently quite different so asking stability from samba is a lot. Anyways for now seems like adding this helped? figured I’d share ..read more

Typical home NAS setup for family pictures/videos

My wife and I currently store our family pictures/videos on our two separate desktops. Each desktop is setup with RAID1 for drive failure mitigation purposes. We have a 2 drive QNAP NAS box and have that setup as JBODs (no redundancy) and use it as a backup for both our desktops' pictures/videos, as well as our documents. We also have an external USB drive as a backup of the NAS. Currently, we typically backup to the NAS at most once a month, so the NAS is powered off most of the time... Read more ..read more

Dear SNB readers, I've just joined the forum, so apologize me if I may post in the wrong section, did my best to find the better spot to do it. I've been recently gifted with a Zyxel NAS 540, which, a very unlucky friend of mine, told me that it was thunderstruck near his apartment. The NAS still works properly in all its functionalities, the only downside is that one of the SATA bay interface got fried, so actually the NAS can only provide 3 out of 4 of the SATA interface (witch degrades... I have been looking or a small 2.5" single bay NAS and just discovered the Orico CD2510. It appears to be one of a number of private labeled devices running the WeLine OS. Devices WeLine Intro The devices require registration and uses an "app" on all supported devices. There is not web interface option per the documentation. Has anyone used this as yet? More importantly, has anyone tried to replace this WeLine with some other OS (Linux, FreeNas, etc ..read more
