<Read in Jimmy’s (Anthony Hopkins) voice >  “On the far edges of the Motherworld’s reach, circling the gas giant Mara, was the small moon of Veldt… In an ambush on the floating docks of Gondoval, Kora triumphed over Admiral Noble, leaving his shattered body on the rocky coastline.”  If you watched Rebel Moon: Child Of Fire, the first part of Zack Snyder’s latest saga, you already get the gist. If not, Jimmy (Anthony Hopkins) gives a quick but detailed recap of the events. In my review, I described Child Of Fire as a long-winded exposition for part 2, as it looked like the bulk ..read more

Guguru Media is joining forces with Genti Media to produce first of its kind radio drama, Murder on Space X. While the acoustic format isn’t new, it is the medium, an X (formerly known as Twitter) Space, through which the drama will be broadcasted that piques one’s senses. As the title implies, listeners can expect Murder On Space X to be a murder mystery audio drama that tells the story of the dysfunctional Chief Macaulay family. With each member of the family nursing their vendettas, the patriarch’s fate hangs in the balance. As dinner unfolds, a deadly scheme reaches its climax, leaving eve ..read more

‘Eyimofe’: What Happens When The Antagonist is a Country?
What Kept Me Up » Movies

The depictions of villains on screen can be tricky. When done right, they are memorable. And when written shoddily, even the most skilled actor can’t save them. They end up cartoonish and childish and can’t be taken seriously. Oliver in Saltburn  (2023)  comes to mind. They lack allure. As a result, a joke is made of the protagonist’s hero journey. Antagonists can’t be evil for evil’s sake in cinema (which the horror genre understands well, with their demonic villains usually given a backstory). Likewise, writing intentional caricature antagonists also requires flair and craft. Filmm ..read more

Kayode Kasum’s Ajosepo is a romantic comedy set around family drama. It tests the boundaries of old relationships and sets the foundations for new ones. At its heart is reunion and reconciliation and the knowledge that there are multiple perspectives to the same story.  Official poster for Ajosepo. Dapo (Mike Afolarin) and Tani (Tomike Adeoye) are set to be married. Their families assemble a day before the wedding, and the drama unfolds in Tani’s family house. Dapo’s family is a dysfunctional, toxic unit best characterised by his manipulative mom (Ronke Oshodi Oke). His dad (Yemi Solade ..read more

‘The Two Aishas’ Review: Rahama Sadau and Maryam Booth are Rivalling Best Friends in Flat 2023 Drama

The Two Aishas stars leading Kannywood actresses Rahama Sadau and Maryam Booth as best friends at loggerheads. The 2023 film is a family and political drama about the strains ambition can place on cordial relationships. While it sets out to highlight the place of friendship in real-life ambitions, the execution is predictable, thus diminishing the emotional sting that predicates the story. Childhood friends, both named Aisha, now married to politicians, have found themselves at loggerheads because of their husbands. Jamal Jibril (Paul Utomi) is set to receive the deputy governor ticket, and d ..read more

Last year, Nigerian films graced several international film festivals. We were well-represented by Babatunde Apalowo’s All The Colours Of The World Are Between Black and White and CJ ‘Fiery’ Obasi’s Mami Wata, amongst other short films. Towards the end of the year, the book adaptation of Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani’s Debut novel, I Do Not Come To You By Chance joined the fold and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). This was met with positive reactions from lovers of film and books, as the film also enjoyed a homecoming at AFRIFF. As exciting as having a Genevieve Nnaji-produ ..read more
