NASA’s Webb Delivers Deepest Infrared Image of Universe Yet

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has delivered the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe so far. Webb’s First Deep Field is galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, and it is teeming with thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared. Webb’s image is approximately the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length, a tiny sliver of the vast universe. The combined mass of this galaxy cluster acts as a gravitational lens, magnifying more distant galaxies, including some seen when the universe was less than a billion years old. This deep field, t ..read more

What Is Beer Lambert (Beer’s) Law & How Does It Enable Spectroscopy?

If you know a little about spectroscopy, you might know that some types of spectroscopy are known as “absorption spectroscopy.”  You also might know that in absorption spectroscopy, the chemical composition of a sample is determined based on how much electromagnetic radiation within a certain spectrum it absorbs.  But how exactly does this measurement work? Just like with almost every element of the spectroscopic method, there is a certain physics phenomenon that governs this measurement process.   This phenomenon is known as the Beer-Lambert law or Beer’s law for short.&nb ..read more

Let’s say you need to find out the chemical composition of a certain liquid or solid sample — for example, to detect impurities. How do you determine this in the quickest, most efficient, and most accurate way?   The answer is spectroscopy — a chemical analysis method that relies on how different chemical elements interact with light and other types of electromagnetic radiation to determine what the elements are.   The key instrument used in spectroscopy is a spectrometer — a simple yet complex machine. But how exactly does it work?   In this article, we will answ ..read more

Looking to implement a spectroscopy solution within your manufacturing process, but not sure what method is right for your scenario?   We’ve got you covered — spectroscopy as science is rather complicated as it is. Throw in the different types of spectroscopy, and you might be left scratching your head.  In our previous article, we covered UV-Vis spectroscopy — one of the most popular and effective spectroscopy methods. However, UV-Vis spectroscopy is not a one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why NIR spectroscopy or near-infrared spectroscopy exists.   In this article, we wi ..read more

Imagine that there are two jars in front of you, both filled with a certain chemical solution. These compounds are completely different from each other, yet to the naked eye, they look identical.  How can you tell what each substance is in the safest, fastest, and most accurate way possible?    The answer is absorption spectroscopy — a scientific method that can determine the chemical composition of a solution by measuring how this solution absorbs electromagnetic radiation.   There are several different methods of absorption spectroscopy based on the exact types ..read more
