Recently I attended my nieces wedding. Like most it was a joyous occasion filled with love, witnessed by family and friends.  As I sat there watching them exchanging their vows, promising to love, cherish and support one another from that day forward it reminded me of another vow. The one I made the day I found out my son had autism. The vow that I would do whatever necessary to help Jonathan live his best life. I began thinking about the many ways autism resembles a marriage. Looking back, I realize that we both encountered our own challenges and triumphs along the way, received support in countless ways, and navigated our own self-discovery. So today is not only about celebrating another year but a lifetime. And while autism may not be a familiar road to everyone, it has taken me to place ..read more

Love teaches us from many directions— joy, happiness, patience, understanding, empathy, humor and forgiveness. Losing a loved one can send us in a tailspin, as it did for me when my father died unexpectedly, right before Christmas. I was bombarded from all sides with an array of emotions- grief, shock, denial and anger to name a few. As I struggled to process the realization that one of the most significant relationships of my life had abruptly ended, something dawned on me. Despite the grief, I understood death is a part of life and that one day everyone dies. Then my thoughts turned to Jonat ..read more
