I’m arranging to travel to New Zealand for a week basically for skiing late August this year. I used to ski as an intermediate many years ago but I think I might have lost all my skills. I would like to purchase a good learner (ski lesson) package preferably including accommodation. I would appreciate some advice for good websites links. I would also like to know if it’s more enjoyable to hire a car rather than using bus transport. If I get a hire car, do I need to put tyre chains on while... Read more ..read more

So as a citizen of Australia I am good to ignore this right? I don't have to start the process and somewhere along the way I have to indicate I am a citizen to bypass it ..read more

We flew into Queenstown last Sunday landing through severe turbulence with people vomiting and holding onto the seats in front of them white knuckled. Getting through customs was delayed as someone chundered on the floor in front of the E-gates. We were booked on a 5 day ski touring trip based at Lady Emily Hut in the Cass Valley. Driving into Mt Cook Village on Monday, we passed a camper van that had just been blown off the road as the storm still raged with 198 kph wind recorded at Mueller... Read more ..read more

Ski Buddy and Yours Truly recently returned from 10 days in New Zealand so that seems like as good an excuse as any to write a few words and post our favourite pictures from the trip. It was our first visit there in five years thanks to Covid. Before that we used to go every year. We flew from Sydney to Christchurch on an Emirates A380 which is a true joy when so few people use this service. We each got a row of 10 seats to ourselves and the crew even handed out some spare chocolates from... Read more ..read more

NZ seems to get better snow than Ozstriya does IMHO. If I were to ski in NZ in 2024 then where would suit a lower intermediate lift skier with some BC skiing interests? A week would be sufficient ..read more

Arrived back in Wanaka last night. Today skied Treble Cone. Conditions were actually pretty good given the rather poor season to date. Coverage in Main basin is still very poor off-piste but still a whole lot better than a couple of weeks again. The groomed trails are working quite well though. Saddle basin quite a bit better but still well down past seasons. Was quite a pleasant day weather wise. Long periods of sunshine. There was a weak front late morning that threatened with dark... I've never skied NZ but my daughter is going to Queenstown for a week for work on the 12th Aug. So she is taking a week off to ski with 5 friends. They are 30ish, reasonably fit, intermediate to advanced, both skiers and boarders. Where would be their best bet? They have money so can hire a car or is the bus the best? Thankfully it looks like the whole area will get 40cm snow in a few days, finally. Thanks John ..read more
