Snail shells in last years pots

Hi everyone. Is anyone able to help with a question about SNAILS please? Last year I filled my pots and troughs with new compost but life was such that I ended up not using some of them. I’m about to start planting up with plants and seeds and the soil in these pits looks lovely apart from a few empty snail shells. Does this mean it’s best not to use this and put in new compost? I’m thinking the little pests might have laid eggs in there or something just waiting to feast on whatever plants or seeds are put in. Such a shame as the soil is lovely. Any advise please ..read more

I would like to plant some trees along a fence boundary to hide the fence and possibly grow a bit higher than the fence. The bed/border is placed along the paving stones of the patio so I’m concerned that if I plant trees  the roots will damage/lift the pavers. Any thoughts from anyone please? Thank you  ..read more

Morning Lee, I’ve an old shrub rose. It’s very tall with a thick woody stem at the base that’s about 50cm in length, there aren’t any visible buds on it. I want to really reduce the height of the rose. David Austin advise I can I hard prune into the thick woody stem but I’d like your opinion mate. Is it ok to cut in to the thick woody main stem (see photo) and how long should it take for the rose to recover with new shoots? Many thanks ..read more

Cutting grass monthly or every quarter?

Hi everyone, I\'ve recently been told that I\'m not to cut grass on banks monthly anymore (normally strimmed or mowed). Apparently, I am now to do it every quarter.  I have recently cut some today and it is an absolute eyesore. When it was cut once a month, it was green, there weren\'t huge lumps and it looked presentable. Now, the grass is verging on yellow, lumps everywhere (h and s issue cutting on banks) and looks unsightly.  I have been told since first ever cutting grass, that cutting grass is good for the grass. But now I\'m being told it is better to leave it. I feel like I ..read more

I have this peace lily that was doing so good last summer and then this winter it started really thinning out, but it has new growth always opening up. However right after a new leaf opens it starts turning black and dies...within like a week. I don\'t know how to help it thrive. I know I\'m not over watering it, I dont think I\'m under watering it either. I wait until the top inch or of soil is dry before watering. I have it in a spot with bright indirect sunlight. This plant is very important to me, it was a small peace lily given to me at a family members funeral. It\'s been around for almo ..read more
