I remember when I got the gardening bug, I got a bunch of catalogues and, when I got a paper route and some money, I ordered some plants and seeds. 50 plus years later, still have the bug, though I can't remember the last time I ordered from a catalogue. I remember a bunch: Wayside Gardens, Monrovia, Geo. W. Park Seed Co, Burpee Seeds, Gurney's from Yankton SD, plus Jones and Scully, the Orchid People in Miami. How about the rest of you ..read more

This is for all the newbies and lurkers who want to start vegetable gardening but might not be sure where to begin. I'm in California now, but I'm originally from Northern Ohio, the Cleveland area, and I'm familiar with the unique challenges of growing edibles with cold seasons. Planted my first garden when I was about six or seven back in the old hometown of Euclid. Mommy and Daddy helped, but I helped eat the crop . . . . Jokes aside, I helped plant and keep bugs at bay, and took note... Vegetable gardening in the cold climates ..read more

In my area, South Central PA, Walmart is already selling some plants for the garden. I bought a couple of Cherry Tomato plants and I wondered if it's safe to have them outside? I am assuming the plants are hardened since Walmart has them exposed to the air, but I'm not 100% sure of this. According to Weather Underground, the night temperatures will drop to the 40s starting next Saturday, Would you put them outside ..read more

@DoomsDave have you ever heard about these trees? Some of the biggest and longest living trees in the world. My friend in NZ sent a picture taken on a boardwalk in front of these trees. I was reading a little about them and that they’re dying from a disease from bacteria tracked into the forest on peoples shoes, and animals. There were articles about not walking near them and cleaning your shoes. The bacteria affects the roots and they stop sending nutrients to the... NZ Kauri trees ..read more

Last summer I planted some carrots, much too late to get anything, and today I was clearing a raised bed to plant onion sets and I found CARROTS!! I have no idea how they survived the winter. Some look like normal carrots and some look like they are part octopus - I'm wondering if these things are safe to eat? It kinda looks off to me ..read more

Bamboo

Sorry I planted Bamboo, the clumping kind, at least it’s not the running type. But clumps spread. I have 3 scrawny clumps the birds don’t like & they don’t shield the neighbors as much as I expected. The roots are shallow so trying to use my Sawzall to get rid of them. Everything I’ve planted the past 10 years I’ve been happy with, and they’ve done what I expected so my percentage of failures is low in gardening ..read more
