During the holidays references to the Christmas truces of 1914 are plentiful in newspaper articles and on television and radio. Many history buffs watch “Joyeux Noel,” the 2005 fictionalized account of a Christmas truce. Songs such as “Christmas 1915” by Celtic Thunder and the old classic, “Snoopy’s Christmas,” by The Royal Guardsmen are played on the radio. Yet all of these are fictitious accounts of the actual events of December 1914; much as the 1997 box office smash “Titanic” is a fictionalized account of the ship’s last voyage. During your week with Adventures in Italy, you will have designated art time, designated cultural activities, and free time to explore.  One place we don’t always get to, but is definitely worth a visit is, oddly enough, the public library. In 2013 the public library in Orvieto developed the idea of a Readers’ Garden to fill the space in the back of the library.  They wanted to feature work of a local artist, and held a competition to determine who would design the space. The winner was Marino Moretti, a well-established ceramic artist.  He looked at the space and the idea of “f ..read more

Is International Travel worth the Hassles—and the Risk?

Is international travel worth the hassles—and risk? For me, the answer is a resounding YES! It’s true there are hassles and also risks, but the rewards can be far greater. And a smart traveler can take steps to minimize risk and deal with any issues that may arise. I just returned two days ago from seven weeks in Europe, hosting five groups in Cornwall, the Luberon, and Puglia. (I spent the last two-and-a-half weeks in the hilltop “white city” of Ostuni in Puglia, pictured above.) Yes, there were hassles during my seven weeks away. But the rewards were so sweet: beautiful scenery, centuri ..read more

Anne & Kirk Woodyard – Music and Markets Tours As many of our tour guests do, we arrive in Europe a few days before our tours start  – such as this weekend when we fit in a couple of days in Amsterdam and stayed in a different part of town than we usually do. Still canal-side, as we love, right on the picturesque Brouwersgracht. Arriving early in the morning from our transatlantic flight, we drop our luggage and head right to a nearby market on a sunshiney Saturday morning. What better way to begin our day than with our favorite Apple Cake and koffie verkeerd (literally wrong coffee ..read more
