Happy Birthday Windy Bey V

I'm not sure that I remember how I managed to get to the Varian Arabians website or what motivated me to click on their stallion page (I don't own a mare, open for breeding) but I am glad that I did it, because there he was, Windy Bey V, a 1999 son of Desperado V (Huckleberry Bey V x Daraska), out of Willow Bey V (S-Shah Bask x Gypsy Mmusic). Do you realize that a horse born in 1999 means that today, in 2024, the 1999 horse is 25 years old? And check out those dapples! WOWOWOW! Back in the day, I understood dappling to be a sign of good nutrition, including nutraceuticals to supplement the h ..read more

A long time ago, I kept my mare in a field with a couple Thoroughbred racehorses. There was one mare in particular, Rocky, who took my breath away whenever I saw her run. The other horses tried to keep up with her and pretty soon, Rocky would lap them once, twice and then, three times. Adrenaline coursing through my body, I felt the sheer power of Rocky's massive body. In her joy and freedom, she wasn't holding anything back. She was invincible. Run, Rocky, run!  I had blogged about Pepita a few years ago, in 2019. Bred by Janow Podlaski stud, Pepita is a 2005 Ekstern daughter out ..read more

TRULY NOBLE

This past week, Tutto Arabi released their April-May Edition, which includes an article written by Dr. Hans J. Nagel. His stallion, NK Nadeer (NK Hafid Jamil x NK Nadirah) recently died. I was touched by Dr. Nagel's use of the word "noble" to describe his beloved horse.  "This was NK Nadeer; a truly noble horse, trusting, with a kind character, without falseness, full of temperament and fiery when given the opportunity."  NK Nadeer (NK Hafid Jamil x NK Nadirah), as photographed by Joanna Jonientz Given that we all understand the straight Egyptian ancestral elements th ..read more

D Khair (BS Raeed x Magic Mon Amour) I was looking through the Jadem Arabians Stallions Guide, which is a beautiful publication by the way, as published by Tutto Arabi this past week. The Jadem facility is impressive, as are the many services offered to the prospective breeder. There are 17 stallions presented in the Guide, including the spectacular Emerald J (QR Marc x Emandoria). However, it was the 13th stallion in the book that was an unexpected but joyful surprise for me: D Khair (BS Raeed x Magic Mon Amour), owned by Alhmoud Stud. Do you know that he's a maternal sibling of the ..read more

Born to Reign, written by Judith Forbis, came at a time in my life when I was more open to the writings of Carl Raswan. Actually, it was something that Judith Forbis wrote about Ansata Delilah in the book that caught my attention and then held it, long enough for me to connect a dotted line between what she wrote in the book and 2 Carl Raswan articles published by Western Horseman magazine. I was fascinated with the subject, however, life and all that comes with it, soon pushes such things out of my "headspace" and soon, I forget. That is, until this week and  an email I received from An ..read more

The Abu Dhabi edition of the GCAT series of shows was held this past weekend, in the Etihad Arena at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The time difference between countries makes watching some of these shows a little more challenging. Many thanks to Arabian Essence TV, who makes the videos from all the shows available on their YouTube channel, thereby providing the opportunity to watch the Senior Mare Championship (SMC) class at a more convenient time.  I have to confess to you that really, the compelling reason to watch this class was all about the charm of the thu ..read more

Early Saturday mornings, while the coffee is still hot, I scroll through my favorite social media pages, like the Facebook group Melissa Huprich created, Fans of Ansata Arabian Stud. This particular Saturday, bitterly cold, gray and surprisingly snowy, was even more quiet than it normally is. When the weather is bad, it's easy to get lost in all the new photos and posted comments. What feels like only minutes, becomes an hour or more. As I made my way through the news feed, my eyes blinked once, then twice. Did I just read what I think I read? An Ansata Sinan son? Out of an Ansata Selman dau ..read more

As the son of Cuban immigrants, I am drawn to the story of Charaff, a 1948 grey stallion bred by Roger Selby. A *Raffles son, out of a *Raffles granddaughter, Charaff was purchased as a young horse by Federico Castellanos y Batista, to head the breeding program he founded at his ranch, San Cayetano, in the province of Camaguey, Cuba. Charaff was immensely popular among Cuban breeders and received considerable attention,  eventually becoming the Cuban National Champion Stallion in 1956.  When the Cuban revolution happened several years later, Fidel Castro's regime took possession of ..read more

HC Abla Raqqas is a 2013 Hadidi daughter, out of Ravenwood Sensation (Ravenwood Majesty x Ravenwood Cody). I wasn't planning to blog about her again but her owner, Christine Emmert, shared the above photo with me. Her hind end is engaged, her back serves as the "bridge of energy", connecting back to front, allowing her hind leg to reach far under her, to drive her body forward, in a relaxed and calm manner, while remaining supple. Do you see the bulging muscles on each side of her spine, in the area between her loins and croup? That's your proof that she is really working her hind end. Chris ..read more

Badia (Ibn Rabdan x Zareefa), from the book, The Arabian Horses of El Zahraa by Dr. Erwin A. Piduch, George Olms, Publisher In 1910, Bint el Bahreyn foaled a Jamil filly, whom Lady Anne Blunt named Dalal Al Hamra. Lady Anne Blunt was delighted with this filly and had recorded that she had "a beautiful, gazelle-like head". Dalal Al Hamra was bred to a desert-bred Abeyyan stallion named Saadoun, whom Lady Anne Blunt had purchased from Shaikh Mishari Ibn Sa'dun of the Muntafiq in 1911.  The breeding resulted in Durra, a 1917 mare, who when bred to Kazmeen, produced Zareefa, the dam ..read more
