How do you narrow a whole year into 10 highlights? It is hard for sure, but I’ve given it my best shot. So, in no particular order……. 1. West Cork Runners Retreat  The Beara peninsula is one of my favourite places, so to bring a group of runners down here (twice) this summer was just wonderful. We went as remote as we could go – all the way to Bere Island and spent our time at Wild Atlantic Glamping savouring the sights and tastes of west cork! To spend such time together was a privilege, with no where else to be, we toasted marshmallows, explored the island and made the most of ..read more

We are inundated with talk of new starts, lofty goals and resolutions this week. Turning over a new leaf is exciting but nothing is as demoralising as launching enthusiastically into an active January but fading back to old habits three weeks in. So if ‘Get Back Running’ is on your wish list this new year, take heed of these tips for making your running comeback a great success. 1. Lower your pace expectations You don’t need to be breathless and pushing your body to its limit for your run to be a good one. Slow down, take walk breaks (yes, they are allowed) and actually let your body enjoy eac ..read more

The best time of the year to start running at dawn
Forget the Gym

I have tried many times to become an early morning runner but most attempts have been short lived. Despite great intentions of starting the day with such success, I have always lacked the enthusiasm and forward planning skills needed to hop out of bed and hit the road in the morning darkness. But over the past few weeks things have changed a little. I now love getting out just before the sun rises to watch the light appear and the day begin. A human alarm clock Most of my early mornings have not been triggered by great motivation and determination but instead by an energetic 4 year old who fee ..read more

December – One mile at a time…
Forget the Gym

December is not a month we usually associate with running goals. It’s often a wind down month, the off-season after a year of races and challenges. So if you are taking your foot off the gas after a busy running year, enjoy the break. But if you know your body (and your mind) would benefit from a little more activity and fresh air this month, can I encourage you to join me on a new project? This one will help keep you motivated but won’t take over your life too much. It’s time for the 1 mile challenge. Why choose a mile? A mile is a reasonably short, measurable and achievable distance for runn ..read more

Are you buying a gift for a runner this Christmas? What should you get them? What do they really need – and what will they actually use? Here are my tips… Choosing a gift for a runner this Christmas may seem like an easy task. There is no end to the clothing and gadgets now available. But you may also be bamboozled by the array of watches and fashionable gear out there. Before you invest your hard earned cash, please remember that runners are quite a fussy bunch. Even though something is voted the ‘best gift for a runner’ doesn’t necessarily make it a good choice for the runner in your life. A ..read more

It’s always great to have something in the diary. It helps us to stay motivated and put manners on our training! We are big fans of parkrun which is on every Saturday (see all locations). Sometimes though, it is nice to train up for a specific one-off race event, pop on a race number, feel the butterflies in the stomach and just go for it. Here are some of these races that we have found – let us know if there are any more we should add to the list. Where will you run next? Race Calendar Remember you can use the search button to filter by distance, name or date. Date Details Sat 2nd Jul ..read more
