Fly Tying: Chromer Snack

Great Colors for Silver Salmon Silver Salmon is one of the most popular game fish for fly anglers. They are aggressive, acrobatic, and an outright blast to hook, especially on the fly. The Chromer Snack is a fly pattern designed by the group that was World Wide Anglers here in Alaska. The shop may be gone, but the legacy continues with this effective Silver Salmon fly pattern. The Chromer Snack is a modern, slimmed-down variation of the ESL with a hint of flash and pizazz. The tyer took some liberties with materials, but the essence of the fly is the same. Try your own variety of colors and ti ..read more

Fly Tying: March Brown by Kevin Foley

March Brown by Kevin Foley About Kevin Foley Kevin Foley is the fly-tying instructor at Mossy’s Fly Shop in Anchorage, Alaska.  His philosophy and teachings on fly tying involve the use of natural and synthetic materials to create the illusion of life.  As a scientist, having received his Master of Science in Fisheries, he believes that observation and time on the water are as important as time spent behind the vise, and that incorporating aspects of fish biology and organism behavior into patterns results in superior flies. His passion for fly tying began on the temperate shores of ..read more

Fly Tying: Trout Spey Micro Sculpin

Trout Spey Micro Sculpin If you haven’t noticed, we are big on Trout Spey. We like everything about it. As it continues to quickly be adopted by more fly anglers, this new method of fly fishing with two to five-weight two-handed rods should become more familiar to everyone who enjoys fishing for trout. Because Trout Spey rods are smaller, some of your standard fly patterns are too big and heavy to cast. While you may have to rethink your angling strategy for these smaller rods, we should also consider rethinking our flies. Trout Spey flies are designed specifically for this rod size and weight ..read more

Photo Credit: James Kim It’s been a long winter and an even longer spring. With mandates being lifted, and people starting to come out of their COVID cocoons, people – especially anglers – are anxious to get outside. Across the world, people have been stuck in their homes trying to figure out a “new normal.” From buying your groceries online or using services like Grub Hub to bring you a variety of meals, to realizing that getting a haircut with the good ole Wahl clippers ain’t so bad. We’ve all probably shopped more online in the last six months than we did all of last year. But with online s ..read more

Head Cement

For the majority of the flies I tie, I rarely use head cement on my whip finish.  But if I am tying a saltwater fly or a larger streamer type pattern, I do like to put a drop of my favorite glue, Liquid Fusion, on to help increase the durability. Most people put the head cement on after they have finished the fly with a whip finish. I like to add it before I tie the knot. I will put a drop on the head before my last few thread wraps.  I then do thread wraps over the dollop of glue, spreading it throughout the entire head of the fly, before I whip finish.  This gets the glue ins ..read more

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the classic chartreuse and white clouser minnow.  I am running the tab as I go here but with this fly I have landed the following species: trout, bass, walleye, catfish, perch, panfish, striper, whiper, bonefish, roosterfish, multiple types of trevally, snapper, jack crevalle, juvenile tarpon, snook, and pompano.  I am sure there are some I am forgetting as well.  Basically, Bob Clouser’s fly is one of the most versatile patterns you can have in your fly box.  The fly itself, was named by Bob’s good friend and fellow icon of the sport, Lef ..read more

Timeless Tips// Benefits Of Short Tag Ends
Deneki Outdoors » Fly Fishing
by Web Editor

When tying flies, start with a short tag end so that you do not need to go back and trim the excess thread.  This won’t save you a ton of time at first but think of all the flies you have tied in your life and the extra couple of seconds you have taken on each of those flies to trim the tag ends of your thread. Add up all those seconds and we are talking about some serious time.  It is also just an annoying extra step that is unnecessary.  Get in the habit of starting your thread and leaving just a small tag end that you can tie down as you go. You can thank me later ? Previous ..read more
