I always look forward to releasing new wild horse artwork and even more so to tell the story behind it. Last spring we travelled to Northern Wyoming with two purposes: to photograph the McCullough Peaks wild horses and to visit Yellowstone National Park.
Spending two weeks near Cody, Wyoming gave us ample time to find and follow the mustangs over several days and the weather cooperated enough to give us some great light and clouds - ideal conditions for wild horse photography! “Living” with the mustangs for long periods allows us to observe the most interesting behaviors.&nbs ..read more

"Wild horse art, with its remarkable ability to transport us to a bygone era, serves as a captivating window into the rich tapestry of the American past." - Maria Marriott
Tango Installation, California
Choosing art for one’s home or office is typically not a task approached with a lot of confidence. In fact, it is something done so infrequently that many people put it off or avoid it altogether. Some take advantage of the services of designers or art consultants to help with selecting the right art and treatment.
It's because selecting art is such a subjective undertaking, th ..read more

"A fresh and innovative perspective on the contributions of female artists to the fine art world."
YJ Contemporary Gallery
This month I am truly honored to be included among a group of talented female photographers being recognized by YJ Contemporary Gallery, based in Rhode Island.
Following are some excerpts from the press release issued about this recognition:
“For the past several years, Brazilian-born wild horse photographer Maria Marriott has tracked and photographed America’s wild mustangs in the most remote regions of the Western United States.
This month she was recogn ..read more

It’s an interesting dynamic… how to turn lemons into lemonade. How to make the best of the unexpected. How to capitalize on the opportunities that present themselves to those who are ready and able.
I can count on two hands the number of times over the past few years that I have been in Nevada (usually to photograph the wild horses) and a snowstorm intervenes.
For those unfamiliar with the situation, I will just be honest… Californians don’t know how to drive in snow, which creates all kinds of problems.
If it starts heavily snowing in the Tahoe area, it becomes an “emergency” situation and b ..read more

Recently, I was in Paso Robles, CA exhibiting some of my wild horse art. Driving around the beautiful area, with the cute town square and surrounding wineries, we were struck by how many references there were to wild horses.
As a horse photographer, my ears perked up with every reference. I’ve done several equine portrait sessions for clients in and around Paso Robles, but had never seen or heard about wild horses in that area. So I set out to find historical references to mustangs in Central California and Paso Robles.
There were so ..read more

"Curiosity is what lets a young mind grow and keeps an old mind young."
- Kelley Armstrong
The Virginia Range, a vast 500 square mile area in Northern Nevada, is home to some of the most iconic and beautiful wild horses in the United States. These mustangs are thought to be descended from Spanish horses brought to the area by early settlers. They are an important part of the state's history and culture, and symbols of freedom and independence.
These are also some of the easiest wild horses to see, as they are often spotted from major roads ..read more

I’m frequently asked if and when I will issue another wild horse image in color, since much of my current ,,wild horse photography work is monochromatic. The answer is that my preference is for monochromatic images, since I believe color can often detract from the beauty, mood and story of an image - especially if overdone.
However, certain images do call for color.

A few years ago, when I was just beginning as a horse photographer, we took our daughter out to search for wild horses in Northern Nevada. In a Jeep Liberty far beyond where it should have gone, we drove for miles into the wilderness, eventually getting lost. So we decided to stop and hike up the side of a steep mountain in order to see if there was a road or two-track anywhere near us. A grueling hike.
As my husband and I sat on a rock to try to recover, our daughter walked a little ways away to see ..read more

As winter settles in and temperature drops, another beautiful season for wild horse photography begins.
Winter is one of my favorite times to go out on the range, especially if the landscape is transformed by a layer of snow. Although it can be more difficult to find the horses - both because they move into more sheltered/less visible areas and also due to challenging driving conditions on the range - snow can provide a different canvas for me to work with as a
wild horse photographer.

The Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates non-profit organization has become a model for working with the community and the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) to manage local wild horse populations in Gardnerville, Nevada. Much of my time as a wild horse photographer is spent on the Fish Springs Range since it is one of the closest ranges to my home.
So it was interesting this past month when I had the opportunity to interview my dear friend Mary Cioffi, President of the Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates, about the work they are doing and some of the successes they’ve had. As a frequent visitor to the range ..read more
