FINE ART AND MY PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESS “In my mind’s eye, I visualize how a particular… sight and feeling will appear on a print. If it excites me, there is a good chance it will make a good photograph. It is an intuitive sense, an ability that comes from a lot of practice.” – Ansel Adams People often ask me what my photographic process involves. I, myself used to wonder what made fine art different from documentary or advertising photography and it is a fine line. After many years of photographing horses and until recently printing them myself I realised that it is, for me, about the intention ..read more

After a very soggy baptism by fire, I’m starting to feel settled in the Byron Hinterland. The floods have been well documented, but the pain continues for many. As we hold our breath and hope a flood doesn’t hit our region for a third time, horse owners are challenged to keep their horses dry, let alone ride. Recently I was lucky to shoot the beautiful Ashlee and Arani before sunset on a gorgeous sunny day. I repeat sunny and dry. Remember that guys!!! Horses are not for the faint hearted. Some shoots absolutely flow, and this was very much the case. I barely had to direct Ash. S ..read more

How many of you would love to travel to an exotic destination, like Italy or India, Byron Bay or The Hunter Valley, riding boots and camera in tow? And in the process learn to take stunning images of your or others' horses. Black Colt is about to announce dates for upcoming photographic workshops over the next few weeks and I am pumped. Mostly because when I first went to overseas workshops years ago I was dying to learn everything, and I imagine my passion drove people mad. I left with questions and learned from that.  But I digress. More on that in a minute. Six years ago I underto ..read more

A couple of weeks ago I was in Melbourne and was looking at different stockists for Black Colt. I am proud to tell you that we have made a fabulous alliance with The Block Shop and online store. This includes a gallery offering 12 framed prints that will evolve and change over time. Another great experience was visiting the pop up shop in St Kilda, opposite this season's site the infamous Gatwick Hotel and seeing the team behind the scenes of all things design. It was great to meet the design team and see the beautiful and incredibly varied design pieces represented in store. With interio ..read more

Majestic polo champion "Ellerston Hermitage", now breeding future polo stars Last week I had the pleasure of visiting stunning 'Archerfield Farm' in Richmond, NSW for a stud shoot. My task was to capture some of the horses that comprised half of the Surfing Cowboys Polo breeding programme. Particularly the prized broodmares, their gorgeous progeny and stallion at stud. The other half of the ponies frolic about on the beaches of South Ballina, NSW in paradise. I've had the pleasure of photographing a few of them in the past, playing chukkas in the waves which looked truly stunning and incredib ..read more

HELLO 2018! So 2017 saw everyone across Scandi cool, the all white kitchen and Millennial pink. In a crazy world of heavy headlines and fake news we saw the demand for authenticity in artwork and peoples' sanctuaries.  Broadly speaking these trends will continue. But with a few new flavours and a twist.  Various design sites acknowledge Millennial pink is prevailing, but add to the mix Ultra Violet and peach over pink, (with sage, celery and avocado green as the new neutrals). With social media dictating and sharing global trends, expect ever more uber gorgeous, escapist travel ..read more

For some time now I have been an equestrian photographer. But it was time to step it up a notch and create fine art from these magnificent animals that have totally changed my life. The pressure cooker of the huge competitions was exciting and I loved the hustle. It is true though that once you bother to learn the rules, you then have a fabulous time breaking them. To me that was the beginning of a beautiful journey after a decade of blood, sweat and tears! (learning dressage, breaking in young horses, fixing fences, feeding up in the dark and cold - all totally worth it). And joy. So muc ..read more
