By Samantha Delouya | CNN A judge has blocked New York City’s minimum wage law for food delivery workers from going into effect on July 12 until there is a hearing for a lawsuit filed by DoorDash and Grubhub against the city. The law, announced last month, would increase pay for app delivery workers to $17.96 per hour before tips on July 12 and bump up the minimum wage to nearly $20 per hour in April 2025. Delivery worker pay would also be adjusted annually for inflation. However, a lawsuit filed jointly by DoorDash and Grubhub to the Supreme Court of the State of New York alleges that the cit ..read more

Federal workplace regulators have fined San Jose food-delivery startup Locale $140,000 for employing more than six dozen teenaged drivers in violation of child-labor law. The drivers, aged 16 and 17, made deliveries for Locale between July 2020 and July 2021, U.S. Department of Labor officials said Wednesday. “Performing time-sensitive deliveries has the potential for an inexperienced driver to get into a car accident and hurt either themselves or somebody else,” said Martin Otero, an Oakland-based community-outreach specialist for the department. LOS GATOS — Jonathan Friedland wondered why his favorite local bakery, Manresa Bread, wasn’t using food-delivery services such as DoorDash or Uber Eats, especially during a pandemic shutdown that kept customers home. The simple answer, he learned, is that some restaurants and eateries that partner with those widely popular apps can’t know ahead of time how much food they’ll need in stock when orders start flooding in at rush hour. Miscalculations can lead to shortages or waste, sometimes a combination of both. Friedland, a 2019 UCLA engineering graduate, began investigating how to solve that p ..read more

The company’s robots are equipped with an array of sensors and cameras, and an empty hull that can be filled with groceries, meals or packages before rolling off on their six wheels to take goods to someone’s doorstep. By DEE-ANN DURBIN | The Associated Press ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Robot food delivery is no longer the stuff of science fiction. But you may not see it in your neighborhood anytime soon. Hundreds of little robots – knee-high and able to hold around four large pizzas – are now navigating college campuses and even some city sidewalks in the U.S., the U.K. and elsewhere. While robots were being tested in limited numbers before the coronavirus hit, the companies building them say pandemic-related labor shortages and a growing preference for contactless delivery have accelerated their deployment. “We saw ..read more
