As we close in on the start of the new spring/summer sailing season, one question that comes up is how to carry out DIY repairs on foils such as the Laser dagger board.  So from the 'Rooster archives' is a short video on how to repair major trailing edge damage  - Check out the below video.  The paint used is a quick drying (and a very similar colour match to the existing satin white finish) is the Plastikote Multi-surface Spray Paint product available from all good hardware stores.... For really strong repairs (in lieu of conventional laminating resin ..read more

Little Boat Bimble - a Threaded Deck Bush

Sometimes a new product comes along that deserves a little more explanation.   Why do small things cause so much irritation? Let's make it better. It can be so irritating when the deck bush comes out of the thwart, Allen's new threaded deck bush solves the issue once and for all. If you need to remake your continuous control lines at the same time why not use some neat Rooster Easy Splice - with its wide range of colours. But if you, like me, like to keep it consistent - Red will be Kicker and Blue the Cunningham. Happy bimbling. Steve ..read more

Computer Fan for Post-Sail Hull Drying

Chris is changing the game here guys ONLY USE WHEN NOT ON THE WATER! : "I made these hatch fans to get my boat hull super dry. Inevitably sailing an older RS400 all year round I get some damp in the tanks so to try to keep it down weight I use these regularly when it’s a warm/dry day. Easy to make from a hatch cover, computer fan and battery pack. Very quick to use, just swap out the front hatches and remove the rear bung for airflow through the hull. A lighter/dry boat is a fast boat." Chris - RS400 1283 ..read more

Riveting Video on Riveting :)

The video tells it all - except where to buy the rivets... Rooster hold many styles of rivets. Rivets are often misleadingly described as 5mm, when they are mostly 4.8mm or the old 3/16": of an inch. Do not make the mistake of drilling out an old rivet with a 5mm drill. Check out this video and all will be revealed.     Rooster stock 3/16" Stainless Rivets in a range of lengths. We also stock Rivets for Carbon and Aluminium Counter Sunk Rivets, ideal for Laser Lower Mast plug replacement as well as 4.8mm Monal Rivets and 4mm Monal Rivets used on Topper Mast Rings. A simple guide to fixing typical damage on leading and trailing edges on dinghy foils. - Write up by Abi Bentley Having never fixed a chipped rudder dinghy blade tip, Roosters Mark Harper (who has built many high-performance dinghy foils in the past) showed me a very simple method of using the handy size WEST SYSTEM Six10 Epoxy to repair such damage. Below is the damage to an RS200 rudder blade causing a rather nasty chip on the rudder tip. This sort of damage is very typical of a dinghy foil. I am informed by Mark, to affect a good repair, you have to assess if the amount of damage, to see ..read more

We had a visit from David Summerville of Phoenix Marine at the Rooster Head Office to demonstrate how he repairs Laser® / ILCA Foils. I am sure that after watching the video you will be well equipped and encouraged to do it yourself, but if you have realised how much time and materials are required, then you might also like to leave it to the experts. Phoenix Marine will repair and re spray (with a water based polyurethane finish using a spray oven). Please contact them directly for a quote. In the video David used polyester products, which are fine and low cost, but epoxy products these days ..read more

A simple kit to test leaking boats
Rooster Sailing Blog » Boat Maintenance Tips

At one RS 300 nationals, Steve found himself in a boat that seemed to be taking on a lot of water. Not the best start to a nationals. A leaking boat is a problem, not only because of the detriment in performance. Lots of hulls have plywood reinforcement, if the wood sits in water it starts to rot and fail, leading to big repair bills. I thought it would be useful to have kit in the toolbox that would allow for a quick and easy test for leaks. Having done a survey of options through Google, these are the results: Get a length of plastic tube and use duct tape or similar to plug into the b ..read more

After the success of our pro grip lengths for racks and small sections. We decided it would be a sensible idea to offer larger panels for those looking to cover a bigger surface area. I purchased an older I14 last year and have been trying to restore it on a budget. It’s amazing with little effort what a difference it made to the boat not only in look but also performance. It is easy to trim with a sharp knife once in place. We went from falling over in tacks to being planted and stable. Check out our work ..read more
