St Croix Trout Series Spinning Rod Review
Trout Resource

For the past several years I use to recommend the St Croix Trout series as my top pick for a premium spinning rod for trout fishing. The reasons why were simple, it has the performance of a high-end rod, with good durability backed by an excellent warranty. In my guide on the best spinning rods for trout fishing guide the St Croix Trout Series has been replaced by the Temple Fork Outfitters Trout Panfish II Series of rods as my top recommendation. I do not believe either are the better rod, but there has been some concerns raised regarding the build quality and aftermarket care of the St Croix ..read more

How to prevent line cuts when fishing.
Trout Resource

Line cuts are painful, they are only made worse when time and time again the line finds the old wound slowing digging deeper. So, what is the best way to prevent line cuts from occurring? One of the easiest ways to prevent line cuts is to wear gloves, problem solved. But gloves make tying knots difficult and having wet fabric next to the skin can make hands feel over hydrated, and not only does that feel werid the skin becomes more susceptible to injuries. So, I prefer to use long leaders and band-aids. Keep reading for more details. Best ways to prevent line cuts when fishing. So, I have two ..read more

Yakima vs Thule (Who makes the best aero bars?)

Introduction Trying to decide between getting a Yakima Flush Bar or a Thule Wingbar Evo but just cannot decide, Well hopefully I can help. I have had decades of experience with roof racks from both brands and have put thousands of miles of abuse on various sets of racks from both brands. For the most part, I use my roof racks for transporting kayaks and rooftop cargo boxes. I do not have any experience with using them with rooftop tents, but I suppose much of my experiences will be relevant. Firstly, both companies make great racks and they get the job done just fine. I normally recommend peop ..read more

Concise guide on how to cast into the wind when fly fishing..
Trout Resource
by Thomas Walsh
1M ago
When trying to fly fish I hate the wind, it roughs up the surface making spotting difficult, and the gusts adds quite a bit of complication to any cast. But a windy day does not have to ruin a fly-fishing trip, there are ways to negate the wind, and in some cases it can even be advantageous. When fishing on a windy day, it is much easier to cast if the wind is behind you. A backwind can even make casting slightly easier, but it is not that simple. Because wind often blows down river valleys, and us trout fishermen usually fish in the upstream direction. This forces us to cast into the wind, or ..read more

Cork vs Foam fishing rod handle! Which is best.
Trout Resource

I want to jump directly to the point; it really does not matter. Both cork and foam are excellent materials for fishing rods handles, and both can put up with years of abuse. I have been fishing for nearly more years than I can remember, and the rod handle material was never the reason I lost the fish or was the cause of a rod failing. Both foam and cork work very well and really come down to personal preference. I like cork, it is natural, well mostly natural it is bind together with all types of epoxies and glue. but the cork itself comes from a tree and I personally prefer how it feels. Foa ..read more

Marble trout are stunning-looking trout found naturally in the rivers and streams of Northern Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. They likely once existed as far south as Albania. In pristine waterways, they can grow to impressive sizes with fish over 50lb (22kg) not unheard of, but like many salmonidae species, their natural range has been greatly reduced due to development and competition with introduced species. So, what are Marble trout? Are they a form of brown trout, or are they a unique species of trout? Their scientific name gives much away; they are most ..read more

(Quick Answer) Can Trout See Uv Lures and Flies?
Trout Resource
by Thomas Walsh
5M ago
Adult trout lack the visual cones capable of seeing UV light, so the use of UV paint or thread on lures and flies will not make trout more likely to strike. Trout will see them just like any other lure or fly, so if it’s a suitable color or pattern for the prevailing conditions they will be as effective as any other lure. UV trout flies and lures designs are to catch fishermen not fish. It is true that young trout, under two years of age do have the ability to see in the ultraviolet. Trout lose that ability sometime before reaching their second year of life. So, if you are targeting fast growi ..read more

Trout in the tropics
Trout Resource

Trout are a much-loved cold water fish native to temperate to subarctic regions located within North America and Eurasia, but thanks to introductions, they can be found far out of their natural range. This means trout cannot be found in at least four tropical countries. While trout are found in these countries, it still does not mean they are living in tropical weather and warm rivers, but they have been established in micro-climates, usually at high elevations within these countries. There the streams run cooler, making them suitable for trout. The most interesting example is Kenya, where bot ..read more

2 vs 4-piece fly rod. Is there a difference?
Trout Resource
by Thomas Walsh
6M ago
This is going to be a short article, because there is next to no difference in performance between casting a modern, graphite 2-piece or a 4-piece fly rod. In the hand, they feel identical. Either, will cast just as far and with comparable accuracy. Budget is also not a consideration, even cheap 4-piece rods have well designed ferrules and minimal flat spots. The main difference between 2- and 4-piece fly rods is in portability, 4 section fly rods simply take up less space and pack away smaller. They are much easier to store and are much more practical to travel with. Perfect for hiding away i ..read more
