Avoiding inguinal hernia surgery

My 92 year old dad has heart failure and is on dialysis but still doing well and living his life. Unfortunately he now has a hanging inguinal hernia that is too large to be pushed back on. The surgeon does not recommend surgery due to his heart failure. Also surgeon said the fact that it's hanging long and out is better than being smaller because smaller bulges tend to strangulate. Can anyone recommend things we can do to make my dad more comfortable to live with this? I bought a hernia belt truss and it does help some. Any other tips? Thank you!! submitted by /u/Pleasant_Wish1799 [visit red ..read more

Hi all new to the group and new to having a hernia. I currently have two inguinal hernias, LH & RHS both just above the groin region, booked for surgery in less than two weeks, the pain at times can be unbearable, from sore testicals, sore upper thighs , sitting down can be uncomfortable the feeling as if your lower bladder area is going to burst etc etc… But the main issue I have is when they are sore is the need to urinate a lot more than normal , has anyone else experienced this ? Is it normal ? submitted by /u/northvic81 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Advice: Scheduled for PP Mesh Surgery

Robotic, laparoscopic with DaVinci robotic assist and polypropylene mesh. Original injury was from cleaning up weight plates. I’m a personal trainer/was very involved in athletics and want to get back to them. I’m scheduled for PP mesh to repair bilateral inguinal and an umbilical. Possibly more, but surgeon said well just focus on these. I keep seeing conflicting accounts of what the best repair method is. Non-mesh vs. mesh, polypropylene vs biomesh. I have two months until surgery. It’s being covered by worker’s comp. Should I inquire about other methods? They said there is no further imagi ..read more

My open inguinal hernia repair and first week

I always find these stories useful, so here is my experience of my open inguinal hernia repair (with LA and sedation) and the first week after it. Ask if you have any questions. Having decided to get an open (not laparoscopic) repair, having LA and sedation seemed like a no-brainer. GA may cause vomiting, coughing, and constipation, any of which could damage the repair (I guessed), not to mention the unwanted grogginess. Before op In the weeks before the op, I had a pre-assessment call with a nurse and two visits to the hospital. They measured temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, SpO2, he ..read more

I felt the most pain over ever felt.

I went to lay down on my bed, and boom. The most extreme pain in my hernia (possible inguinal hernia) it felt like it exploded. I was screaming because of the Pain. I kneeled on the floor and when I went to get up, I felt this horrible pain shoot through my left leg. Feels like it’s bleeding on the inside. I’m at the E.R right now. Anyone else went through this? UPDATE: I’m good now. I think what happened is that the hernia tore through the pelvic wall and caused some sort of extreme pain. I’m definitely scared of that happening again and I’m probably gonna get Surgery. submitted by /u/Odd-Q ..read more

Went over a few studies regarding absorbable mesh and confused why this isn't the standard?

Results from a study out of Denmark: The meta-analyses showed no difference in recurrence rates (median 18 months follow-up) and chronic pain rates (1 year follow-up) between absorbable- and permanent meshes. Crude chronic pain rates for the RCTs were 2.1% for the absorbable meshes and 7.6% for the permanent meshes. For the absorbable meshes, medial hernias were more susceptible for recurrence compared with lateral hernias ( P < .0005). None of the studies reported allergic reactions or other serious adverse events related to the absorbable mesh. It seems like absorbable mesh provides the ..read more
