I am so excited to announce that my standard poodle, Sojourner, has completed his AKC championship! The Road To The AKC Championship
Sojourner is my first Bred-By-Exhibitor AKC champion. I did not expect him to finish his championship as quickly as he did. In fact, I thought it would take us at least a year to earn his championship. But Sojourner walked into that ring with other ideas in his head!
Instead of 12 months, Sojo did it in two weekends with two 5-point majors, a 4-point major, and the final point on the last day. He also took a group 1 and group 2 from the Bred-By-Exhibitor class a ..read more

Sojourner’s very first dog show was this last weekend, in Fairbanks Alaska.
I don’t think I can come up with the right words to describe what a special weekend Sojourner and I had in Fairbanks, Alaska at his first dog show. Sojourner is 13 months old, and that is already a challenging age to introduce something as complicated as appropriate training and behavior for an AKC dog show. Sojourner and I did a lot of training to prepare him for the experience of his first dog show. But at the end of the day, there is just nothing quite like getting into the dog show ring and experiencing it all firs ..read more

It has been a LONG day!! I know folks are excited to know which puppy is staying here at the Galavanting homestead and I wanted to update before trying to sleep before another big day tomorrow…
I headed to Groomingdales K9 Design for puppy conformation evaluations with my great friend and purebred dog mentor, Kathy, and her daughter (also a great friend!) Carlee during a big snowstorm earlier today. Driving was a little freaky, but nothing too awful and certainly not anything so bad I was going to reschedule the evaluations!
All nine puppies were evaluated on their structure (conformation), th ..read more

I was at a dog show today! The Alaska Kennel Club dog show in Anchorage is the traditional start to our all-breed dog show season in Alaska.
Unfortunately, Sojourner sprained a muscle in his rear and I had to pull him from the show. I was HEARTBROKEN. So many months planning and preparing for Sojourner’s dog show debut. Only to have it all dashed a week before the shows.
But, I am happy to report that Sojourner is doing well, resting and healing. His dog show debut has simply been delayed.
A friend from Washington had come up to visit, attend the dog show, and meet the some of the Galavanting ..read more

White standard poodle, Lakeridge Galavanting Never Out of Style, running at an AKC dog show
Grace had a magnificent first year out as an AKC show poodle.
I have to be honest: I did not expect 2021 to be quite as successful a show season as it ended up being for my “baby” Grace. The fact of the matter is, American Kennel Club dog show season in Alaska is painfully short. It is incredibly difficult for a poodle in Alaska to finish her AKC Championship in a single show season. With only 16 All-Breed dog shows and 1 Non-Sporting Dog Club show between May and the end of July, my goal for the Alask ..read more

The Dog Days of Summer
This summer has been one for the books.
Bryce used the summer of 2019 to prove the coolness of poodles; dyed hair! Bryce sported dyed bracelets and ears all summer.
First, the heat! Alaska has experienced record breaking heat all summer long. And if the records were only barely broken. If the heat index had registered only a smidgen above what is normal for Alaska summers… maybe I wouldn’t be so worried.
But the records that were broken were not gently tapped with the butt of a butter knife until cracks could be seen.
Nope.
Instead, these records were smashe ..read more

The Poodle National; The Greatest (Poodle) Show on Earth!
Pali gets ready for her ring debut at the Poodle National Specialty
Olivia and Ethan grooming a black standard poodle just before ring time.
I’m still coming down from the high that is the Poodle Club of America’s National Specialty. I got to spend a great week with friends and fellow poodle enthusiasts.
I ate a lot of junk food
I bought a ton of stuff
I didn’t sleep a wink
And I laughed with friends until I cried.
SUCCESS.
No Sleep ’til… Purina Farms!

Poodles: More than just a pretty face.
Poodles are probably best known for their fancy haircuts and circus antics. But long before Poodles were performing tricks for human entertainment, they were the staple breed for the various water retrieving dog breeds we know today. It is the long history of selectively breeding the Poodle type… from water retriever to trusted human companion… that gives us a dog breed so diverse in natural talents.
Training
Did you know… Poodles are so intelligent, they are known as natural problem solvers? This means that Poodles are quick learners. Training a Poodle t ..read more

Have Poodles, Will Fly
Sweet white Poodle puppy waiting at the airport check-in to fly to Seattle.
If you were to ask me what question I get asked most often when I travel with my dogs…
My answer would be that the most common question I get asked is;
“Did they fly on the airplane too?!?”
This question always gives me pause. I mean, it seems obvious to me the dogs would fly on the airplane. Air travel is, clearly, the most logical way to cover great distances in a short time.
thank you, Occam’s Razor
But, you know, I get it. When a person doesn’t have dogs or doesn’t travel a lot with dogs, it ..read more

Kluane’s Adventure at the dog shows
January in Alaska is all about rest.
January in Alaska. Kind of a blah month in the Great White North. Typically cold and still limited on daylight, January tends to be a time of stillness for the Galavanting crew.
Some Januarys, I love the stillness.
January of 2018, for example, that stillness was necessary… important, even, for my own health and well being.
But January 2019 tells a completely different story. This January, I was ready to hit the road!
Trips for rejuvenation looks different for different people. Some folks prefer a secluded getaway where ..read more
