Little Hawaiian Fun

I'm always distracted by something new.  Joined a Hawaiian quilting group on Facebook which reminded me of how long it's been since I made one, and how much I enjoy the process.   Here's a sneak peak.  It's going to be a 60" lap quilt  for a gift or donation with a goal to finish in under 2 weeks.  ..read more

Temp Quilt Finish

I started a Temperature Quilt in 2016 when they were all the rage.  I used a thin strip for the low and a wide strip for the high.  I did not anticipate how hot our summer was ant there is a lot of red and orange in this quilt.  I completed the first 30 weeks in 2016 then it got set aside.  I finished the flimsey in 2019.  Since November, I've spent all my quilting time working on this gigantic Lone Star variation that is hand quilted with wool bating.   I pulled the quilting frame out of the shed for the first time in about 20 years.   While th ..read more

I have a new favorite fast quilt.   Followed a Pintrest post to Blue Feather Quilt Studio.  I used their EQ7 design as inspiration for the following quilts.  Round 1 was a donation quilt using lots of leftover strips.  The greens all look different in different light, but the concept shows up with the contrasting zig-zags.  It actually looks better in the photo than in person.  I need to buy poly batting to finish this one since it's for Threads in Faith that ties quilts with prayers.   So I dug through the batik stash, looking for a trans ..read more

Donation Quilts

I have been clearing random fabrics from my sewing room by making donation quilts.   I start by aiming for the sizes requested by Threads In Faith.  which are 45-60" size.  It is a prayer ministry started by friends of mine.  The quilt recipient is someone who is in need of prayers.   A group will tie the quilt while saying prayers for the recipient with each knot.  A layer cake that I bought for a quilt that I never made because I could never find the llama fabric on a bolt.  (That was why I bought it to begin with.) Two or 3 super cute ..read more

You've been following this quilt for 8 years now.  This week, finally finished the hand quilting.  While taking photos, was a bit disappointed in a few bits, so there will be some more hand details added at some point.  Or maybe not.   Time will tell.  25 blocks.  I did the first 15 blocks in 2014-2015. 10 blocks Fall 2020. Swags 2021. Started quilting January 2022.  Finished May 2022 ..read more

On my Wall of Shame  (the design wall with ignored & neglected projects), were several improv blocks using up the leftovers from this pair of quilts.  The quilt above was a wedding quilt for my daughter and the one below, the Groom's Quilt made to go with it.   I decided to attack a bucket of scraps.   Only to discover that there were also ..read more

Friday night, a friend posted a picture of her wearing a cute apron, and I decided to make one for her from a pattern I'd bought but never used.  I found this floral and coordinates in the stash, purchased for a quilt I never made 10 or more years ago.  It was so cute, I had to make one for myself too.  There was also a stack of 10" precut squares from this line.  I made this into a 60" quilt top for a friend's new charity Threads of Faith. It will be stitched in the ditch, then a team of volunteers will tie the quilt, while praying for the recipient during the p ..read more

Retirement Countdown Quilt

I have started a new quilt for myself. A block per week, reflecting something I experienced. They are 4 inch blocks to countdown the 196 weeks until retirement. Block 1 is our conversion to a new computer system at work. The login for our region is Mountain Epic. I've decided on a color pattern sticking with the blue side of the color wheel: lime, green, teal, purple, pink and, of course, my FAVORITE color Fuchsia.  That's the reason my yellow crocus are chartreuse. Block 2 celebrates crocus and bubbles. Gold Digger sparkling mimosa at Blue Bench Brunchette. Block 3 is the ..read more

Slowly making progress on handquilting Biggs.  The row nearest the camera is complete as well as 2 sides on the borders.  My current strategy is to focus on one row at a time from the outside in.  This is perfect weather for hand quilting without a frame.  Need to finish before it gets warm Most of the Sashiko centers are finished, so this is 1" filler grid and  3/4" wide rows to the swags. Each of the corner "stupid flowers" are boxed in with an extra double row of hand stitching.  That part is finished for the whole quilt.  Now just some nar ..read more

It's Fine

I am finally quilting the Benjamin Biggs Quilt.   It has not been without it's challenges.   The plan is FMQ around the applique in white thread to secure the design, then add hand stitching.  My FMQ is not as precise as I'd sometimes like, but considering I'm doing it on a $100 Singer, it's fine.  My least favorite process which involves crawling around on the living room floor sandwiching and pinning layers.  Cat Management failed to warn me that the batting I had on hand was 5 inches short on one side.  Replacement batting purchased.  ..read more
