Sealing Duroc (cement board) seams/corners in a Shower - Kerdi Band or Just Straight Mortar/Mesh Tape?

Hi, Was wondering if its better to use mortar and Kerdi band for the cement board seams/corners or the mesh tape and mortar? I tend to think the Kerdi band is a better way to go (less likely of any cracks in the mortar corners/seams)? Any right or wrong way to go here? I will be applying some MAPEI Aqua Defense after the seams/corners are done and the shower pan is installed ..read more

Using one pass to skim coat shower floor before tile.

My tile guy used one pass wall repair (by rapid set) at about 1/4 inch thickness, to skim the slope before installing tile with thinset. Below the one-pass layer is about 1.5 inches of properly layer and sloped mortar shower pan above a sloped wet mop job. We plan on installing ceramic peble. I thought this may be the wrong product. Does anyone see a problem with this? What may be the problem of there is one? [ATTACH type="full"... Using one pass to skim coat shower floor before tile ..read more

Messed up tile / niche measurement - is there a workaround

My tile layout is leaving me with a ~1/2" tall piece of tile above the niche. My original plan was to use schluter aluminum profiles around the top and vertical legs of the niche. The niche bottom is a scrap piece of quartz. Can I use a piece of pencil trim above the niche? And the schluter profiles on the vertical legs? OR will that look too busy? Or is there another workaround? Thx ..read more

Old concrete and lath wall

Hello. Bathroom project on house from 1955. Under the tile was 2” of concrete and lath. All has been removed to studs except the outside wall which the lath and concrete is over cinderblock. Behind the cider block there is an airspace of 6” or so and then brick outside wall. Tiles are removed but needed to use grinder and hammer drill so the surface is not smooth. My thought is to use thinset to float waterproof go board onto the wall and then use go board for the rest of the shower walls... Old concrete and lath wall ..read more

Bathroom door sill placement

I am getting ready to tile a bathroom. Inside the bathroom will be 3/8" tile. Outside will be 3/4" hardwood flooring. I'd like to install the door jambs on top of the sill so I don't have to undercut the door jambs or casing later. Cutting the casing on the miter saw is cleaner than messing around with a Oscillating tool. Do I place the sill exactly parallel with where the hardwood flooring will end? (I know I need to install cement board under the sill). Thanks.[ATTACH... Bathroom door sill placement ..read more

Need a water sealer for shower grout

I bought the blue bag of Mapei Ultracolor Plus grout at Floor & Decor for a leaking and cracking grout in a shower. It still leaks. I went back to F&D and discovered I should have bought the orange bag Ultracolor Plus FA which is waterproof. Is there a super waterproof grout sealer? Or am I forced to scrape it out? I can't go over it as it's too wide ..read more
