We are sad to report the passing of a dear friend, Dave Wicks, in January 2024. Dave was a long time member of Leatherhead Petanque and Oxshott Petanque clubs. He played in the North Downs League (NDL) for the Moles and also in the SCPA six-a-side league. Dave was proficient in both pointing and shooting and was the first person to win the club’s Founders Cup undefeated, winning all six qualifying events. He was very competitive, having a strong will to win and was always one of the first names on the team sheet come match days. Dave’s other interests included music, especially blues, and runn ..read more

We are sad to report the passing of a dear friend, Ron Phelps, at the Royal Marsden hospital last weekend. Ron was a bit of a character, a one off, and a founder member of Leatherhead Petanque Club where his shooting style earned him the nickname ‘Starburst’. He played in the North Downs League (NDL) for the Moles and also in the SCPA six-a-side league. Ron enjoyed several trips to France and his liking for a certain tipple lead to him being affectionately know as ‘The Calvados Kid’. When the club moved to Oxshott Village Sports Club, Ron was an integral part of the six-a-side team (Ospreys) w ..read more

On Sunday morning, 12th November, at a charitable Poppy Doubles competition run by Cobbetts Boules Club, the very sad and tragic news filtered through to those playing, that Paul Leverett had passed away following a heart attack the previous night.  On behalf of all the members of the Southern Counties, we send our deepest condolences to Hassi and family at this very difficult time.  Our tribute to Paul Paul enjoyed a number of different hobbies. He was a guitarist in a band, he enjoyed restoring motorbikes, and had just recently got into sailing. Paul, unlike most mere mortals, had ..read more

A cold start to what turned out to be a bright sunny day. 26 teams overnight, but an 8am dropout meant byes, and some rejigging of the afternoon games. Play started promptly at 10.00, and after the morning leagues only 4 teams were on three wins: Tim and Becky on +28, Martin and Nigel on +23, Michael and Geoff on +22, and Mark and Will on +17. More surprising was seeing GWR’s Phil Bradshaw and Mark Gay, and our own Hassi and Mark, barely scrape into the Silver seeded at 15th and 16th respectively with a solitary win apiece. The afternoon was Gold and Silver with consolages, and a rejigged Bron ..read more

New Petanque England membership for club-level players At the Petanque England AGM in December, members voted to introduce a new membership type aimed at club-level petanque players who do not need a licence as they do not play in any regional or national competitions. I’m pleased to tell you that this has now been implemented by the Petanque England board. It is called ‘Club Player’ membership and is available for just £10 in 2023. Of the £10 membership fee, £6 goes directly to SCPA to be used for promotion and support of grass-roots petanque in our region. It will be ‘ring-fenced’ for this p ..read more
