My name is Neelam Hakeem (@Neelam_) and I’ve always struggled with covering my hair because I’m obsessed with cute hair styles and I thought that covering it took away from fashionable looks I used to go for.  My opinion changed drastically on #MuslimWomensDay as I trolled trough the hashtag becoming spellbound by the beautiful Muslim women and girls who slayed with extreme prejudice, modestly. It was at that moment that I decided to commit to modest fashion. I also wanted to, as a black woman and M.G.T., to possibly make a difference like the girls I have seen that inspired me. So I dec ..read more

2015 was an amazing, stressful and long year ! From graduating from the best school in the world the illustrious Howard University ( the real HU !) to moving back and readjusting to life at home with my parents and deciding what was next for me. I lived off campus for 2 years so I was living the life, free,  so to move back was a little weird to me. Yes, I missed my family so much and missed all the impromptu family time that is guaranteed in our house. I missed spending times with my nieces and nephews that I felt that I missed while away.  I missed having my dads hot cooked food ..read more

On a beautiful Sunday morning last month with the summer days winding down, my mom, my sisters, and I took a little trip to a local community garden. What was special about this garden is that it is a quaint oasis of greenery, tucked away on a Brooklyn street right in the middle of East New York. East New York is a Brooklyn neighborhood which has struggled for the past few decades as an under-served community. We set out to participate in an outdoor cooking class with ,personal chef and nutrition educator Sophia S. of Project Homemade ENY. Sophia has taken her passion for nutritious ..read more

This past weekend we hosted a SummerTime StoryTime Event,For the Love of Reading, with our friends and family. My son and I frequent story times at least 2X a week. Between Barnes and Nobles and the local libraries we have become story time regulars. After leaving Barnes and Noble one day, I thought it would be a little more enjoyable for me and my son if I was able to sit with adults that I knew and for him to play around afterwards with children his age. I love being outside, especially since we’ve been having an unusually ‘springy’ summer here in New York so I thought, let’s give this ..read more

Last week my sister and I decided to take our nieces and nephews to "COUSINS CAMP". It's been a long 2020 year indoors, quarantined, in front of the computer and just not normal so we wanted to help make some good memories come out of 2020 for them. Our 10 nieces and nephews (including my sons) range from 1 to 14 years old! We could handle the fun but we knew we needed someone to help with the food. So we asked my mother if she would help be the Cook for the 3 days Camp Trip! So naturally she hired my Dad to come and help her and it was the best decision we made for that weekend! Best cafeteri ..read more
