LEE COUNTY, Fla. — One Cape Coral family known to decorate their home with over 200,000 lights is closing their 17-year chapter this year.
Neil Monkman says he started decorating his home after watching a Christmas light commercial and decided to take up the project.
Years later, it grew from a city-wide state to a widespread sensation, with visitors all over the state.
“I really never knew that it would have that much of an impact on people and we’ve seen we literally had thousands of people that combine and see the display,” said Monkman.

The cold front we have been talking about over the last few days is pushing across SWFL this evening.
With it, we are tracking a line of broken showers and storms. Some will produce heavy downpours along with the chance for gusty winds upward of 30mph.
These will move out of here to the SE by the early morning hours.
Clouds will begin to clear out through the morning hours on Monday, and we will see mostly sunny skies.

Starting the day off, we will feel warm and muggy with lots of sunshine. By the afternoon, clouds will increase ahead of the cold front. Highs will still run warm in the lower 80s.
The highest potential for strong storms on Sunday will be north of our area. However, we still have the potential for a few downpours and gusty winds in DeSoto, Charlotte, and Lee County late afternoon/evening. It was a beautiful Saturday across SWFL, but we are tracking more impactful weather for Sunday as a cold front rolls through.
The remainder of Saturday will be partly cloudy and mild. Overnight, lows will fall into the mid-upper 60s. It will feel a bit muggier Sunday morning. We will also get some sunshine early in the day. It will be a warm and muggy weekend, especially today as we wait for a cold front to move in tomorrow evening.
Temperatures will range in the mid 80s for much of SWFL. We keep rain chances low today with a sprinkle or two popping up inland this afternoon.
The cold front will move through the area late Sunday. in the afternoon, a few isolated showers will move across the area before the main line moves in by dinnertime.

Although we have been dealing with an increase of cloud cover on Friday, it has felt nice, with temperatures back near average.
The clouds will stick around through the rest of the night, which will help limit temperatures from dropping too much overnight. Lows will be in the mid-60s across SWFL. NAPLES, Fla. – A Porsche was destroyed after crashing into a dumpster in Naples on Friday morning.
Around 12:15 a.m., the car lost control and crashed into a dumpster near the 1100 block of Sandpiper Street. The car was pushed 20 feet into the driveway of a neighboring home.
According to crews on scene, Thomas Wescott Johnson was arrested after not sustaining any injuries. Christa Rosenberg was identified as the passenger in the car and was taken to the hospital for her injuries.
The Naples Police Department is investigating.
Johnson is facing DUI charges including serious bodily injury.

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office announced the passing of a retired K9, Karma, on Friday.
Karma’s career with LCSO began in 2014 when she specialized as a narcotics K9. She worked with both Captain Russell Park and Sergeant Justin Adams during her time with the sheriff’s office, according to LCSO.

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — A local historian is using her voice to protect a cemetery in North Fort Myers from the 1800s where a proposed development nearby is under review.
“It was almost destroyed in 1990 when the owner at that time decided to bulldoze it so he could rent the land for cattle,” Joanne Miller said.
She is a local historian who wants to save a grave.
“Jacob Daughtery, the man there was quite somebody important that we need to preserve,” she said.
