Even though it's already mid-April, I did start seeds for weeks six, five and four before the potential last freeze dates from March 5-19. I almost gave up on posting, BUT it's never too late. Also, I tend to lose steam during the whole seed starting cycle; I'll start off like a firecracker and then wane down to spark. Seeds have been planted, stuff is growing, seeds have died. My experience on how to start seeds

Something about growing plants from seeds felt really intimidating. When I first started gardening it was daunting enough to keep the dang plants alive, and I learned a lot such as how one little cabbage looper worm can wreak havoc and mass destruction in a single day. The idea of starting from seed seemed far too advanced for me. The post My experience on how to start seeds appeared first on My Midwest Nice Garden ..read more

This whole adulting, having a full-time job hoopla really gets in the way of gardening and related blog documentation. Spring is almost here and garden activities are ramping up! I started week 7 seeds on Saturday, February 26, and seven days later and nearly all of the seeds have popped up already. Like hiking in the mountains or a freshly baked chocolate-chip cookie, it NEVER gets old. The post 7 weeks out! Seeds I’m starting inside appeared first on My Midwest Nice Garden ..read more

It only took one week into seed starting to change up my planting plan. Seven days after I started week 10 seeds some cells were still bare, so I hastily threw down more seeds in the empty cells as insurance. The six-packs also looked so small in numbers that I went ahead and doubled the amount of lettuce starts for each of the three varieties, going from 12 to 24. The post 8 weeks out! The time has arrived to start seeds inside! And, not a moment too soon because this is the point when winter drags on and it feels like spring will never get here. Last week, we received nearly 6 inches of snow and seed starting seems odd and hopeful at the same time, like experiencing the range of emotions in Inside Out. The post 10 weeks out! As a novice gardener I spend a lot of time making lists, creating spreadsheets, researching topics, and jotting down random thoughts in notebooks. The kinds of plants and varieties that catch my eye, if I’d start from seed or direct sow or buy a seedling, seed starting or transplant dates – all of it is written down. Mistakes I made as a novice gardener

If I look back over the last couple of years with gratitude, I was lucky and privileged to have more time at home to experience my first full growing season. I threw the bulk of my attention and energy to my garden from late summer 2020 to the end of 2021, to focus on what I could control despite all that had gone wrong in the world. 2021 plant list! See what I grew

As it turns out, there isn’t much garden activity in the depths of winter for zone 6. I’m back to more planning after recording my initial 2021 garden reflections and completing a few winter tasks. Also, it’s cold. I lived in the Deep South for a time and lost any tolerance for being cold. The post 2021 plant list! See what I grew appeared first on My Midwest Nice Garden ..read more

Garden tasks to prepare for winter

It's officially winter! The winter solstice has come and gone (December 21) and it only gets brighter from here. I've launch this website, reflected over my 2021 garden and wrote down thoughts for 2022, and now it's time to rest. Well, honestly I've been relaxing and have barely done anything outside, except lament over the garlic sprouting too early and gleefully discover surprise carrots.
