Sahel Economic Woes Persist Despite Easing Sanctions

Ramadan preparations in Nigeria begin long before the crescent moon is sighted. Like many people, I buy food in bulk: rice, millet, maize, beans, beef, and poultry. I also engage a small-scale baker – *Fatima’s service. She sends snacks: samosas, cupcakes, spring rolls, and chin-chin for iftar (the fast-breaking evening meal for Muslims)   This year, the preparations for Ramadan were different from the previous years. I could not afford to buy as much as I did last year, as most prices have more than doubled. A 10kg bag of rice during Ramadan of 2023 was around 5,000 Naira. This time ..read more

This week, on March 4, the National Assembly of The Gambia held its first sitting for the legislative year 2024. Almameh Gibba, Foni Kansala representative, tabled a bill that seeks to repeal the Anti-Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) protections under the Women’s (Amendment) Act 2015. In December 2015, towards the end of Yahya Jammeh’s dictatorship, the Women’s Act 2010 was amended to provide for eliminating harmful traditional practices by the National Assembly  Gibba argued that FGM is deeply rooted in culture, using religious purity in Islam as a base. A prominent Imam Abdoulie Fatty, Pr ..read more

Ethiopia’s Moral Panic: What Gay Marriage When We are Running for Our Lives?

Amid civil strife and famine in various regions, Ethiopia finds itself grappling with an unexpected foe: the specter of gay marriage. Yes, you read that correctly. In a country where more than half of the population has faced conflict, fighting, and displacement in the last three years, and millions are facing severe humanitarian crises, our fractured society seems to have found one uniting concern: who is saying, “I do.” There’s a bizarre phenomenon where countries in a national identity crisis weaponize LGBTQ+ rights to distract from or justify critical social and political questions of the ..read more

The world is on fire. Empire is crumbling everywhere. Empire is responding as it knows best – silencing, oppressive, leveraging all the isms, and the mighty patriarchy, to remind us how mighty empire is – and how it can crush us all with its boots, like the ants we are. A long time ago, I read a story about the Elephant and the Ant – with a lesson about never underestimating others or yourself, especially when faced with a bully. Convening in Barbados, hosted by the Black Feminist Fund, in community with 300+ Black feminists from around the world – I was reminded of how powerful and true this ..read more

The inaugural International Day of Clean Energy was held on 26th January 2024, when the International Renewable Energy Agency was established 15 years ago. It is a significant day for  (Central, East, Southern and West) Africa, which has the lowest energy access rates in the world, accounting for only 3 per cent of global energy use. The continent is struggling with some of the worst impacts of climate change caused by fossil fuel use while also at a crucial moment of transition to renewable energy.  At COP 28 held in Dubai last December, parties agreed to triple global renewable pow ..read more

In early January, shortly before the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicked off, one of the most decorated Senegalese footballers, Sadio Mane (31), became the topic on various internet forums upon his wedding to 18-year-old Aisha Tamba.  Outside his national and international football accolades, Mane is well known for his generosity and commitment to his home, where he runs several charity initiatives, including hospitals and a football pitch, to elevate his community. His philanthropic efforts are unrivalled. When I heard he was getting married, I was happy and excited for him. Th ..read more
