One of the most common mistakes we see when goose hunting over decoys in Colorado is when hunters don’t let birds finish. Sometimes geese will work decoys for a few passes before finishing and giving hunters a good opportunity. The good goose hunter learns to enjoy the show and wait for the right time. The rookie gets impatient and decides to call the shot the first time birds hit the 40 yard mark.   Nothing is more frustrating to experienced goose hunters than being in the same area as a field where hunters are shooting before the time is right. We’ve been getting quite a few questions about how much to tip guides while goose hunting in Colorado. Understanding everyone is working on a budget, hope this article provides some clarity.   When considering the amount to tip, please keep in mind the amount of work that goes into a day of hunting. Very often times, guides put an incredible amount of work into scouting and preparing materials for hunts before you even arrive. While this is a labor of love for them, and they get a per gun fee, the bills do pile up.   When dining at a restaurant, 15% on your tab is the standard amou ..read more

Gun safety during a guided duck hunt in Colorado

Gun safety during a guided duck hunt in Colorado can be easily overlooked if certain simple rules aren’t followed. Most duck hunts are out of a stand up blind on the edge of a pond, lake or river. These blinds can be safer than pits, but still pose the same risk of a hunter swinging out of their lane and injuring another hunter. You may have heard the phrase, “getting your bell rung”. Simply put, this means that a hunter’s head is within the “blast cone” (shock wave that leaves the muzzle which is wider than the actual shot) when a shotgun is discharged. Imagine shot leaving the muzzle of a ..read more

Ice hunting for geese in Colorado

A few years ago, I was describing to a guide in training how exciting ice hunting for geese in Colorado can be. He immediately looked at me and said “I’m not gonna buy that BS. Why would a goose land on plain black ice?” We just so happened to have a hunt where one of our clients couldn’t hunt in a pit because of his knees. We decided to hit one of our frozen lakes and set up shells and full bodies. There was incredible goose traffic over this particular lake and I was confident in our chances. The morning flight got off the roost and headed out to feed. We’re got a few looks but nothing commi ..read more
