Many of you who read my blog and chat with me about fishing know that I have not done a lot of trout fishing this year.  I have gotten out a few times for trout.  One trip was to the Green River with my dad for a couple of days, once to Strawberry Reservoir, and the other was times were with my brother in a small stream for cutthroat.  Other than that I don't remember actively chasing trout this year.   I gave a decent amount of my trout based flies and gear (like indicators, tippet, etc) away to friends, family, and new fly fishers.  I am back down to a very ..read more

So, Not Only Trout has had this website up and running for a little over a year at this point.  It has been a really interesting experience with some great moments and some moments of frustration. More than anything it has been a massive learning experience for me.  I am so thankful for the people that have helped me learn and notice when things need to be changed.   During a couple recent conversations, with some people I really respect, it came to light that the website could use some touchups in various aspects and that it needed a pretty serious overhaul for mobile users.&nb ..read more

Quick Pond Session
Not Only Trout Blog
by Spencer Mortensen

Just recently I had the chance to get out to one of my local ponds for an hour or so.  When I got there I was a little disappointed and surprised by the number of people who were fishing this little pond. I knew that with my busy schedule that day that I wasn't going to be able to drive to a different body of water and hope for a better opportunity. I decided to fish my ShadowFIRE 365 Tenkara rod and to see what I could accomplish while avoiding trees, reeds, and other bits of vegetation.  I almost immediately saw activity from a few fish in the shallows, but after fishing the f ..read more

This last weekend I received a couple messages from a customer, George, that let me know about a fun trip he had been on.  He shared the the water wasn't too treacherous, that the golden ghosts (carp) were no where to be seen, but that the spotted bass were coming in hot!   This first picture is from this last weekend.  He was fishing the Hoover Mover.     This second picture is from a while ago - he did me the favor of finding a picture of another one that was caught.   This second one was caught on a Carp Skittle.   Outside of things in my p ..read more

Over the last year I have been trying to add more products to the shop and have them be products that I actually use and enjoy. One of the products I have selected to add have been the Anadromous Fly Company tools.  Check out this link to see the Fly Tying Tools that are available.   I have personally been using the Whip Finisher Mini and the 4" Tungsten Carbide Straight Blade scissors and have been really enjoying them.   Probably my favorite thing about these scissors is their ability to easily cut through the 50D Semperfli NanoSilk (or whatever thread for tha ..read more

Today is December 31, 2021.   It is a fitting time to do a recap of everything that happened during 2021 for Not Only Trout.  There were a lot of ups and downs and a lot of different changes that happened during the year. The year started off with a post a day on Instagram and Twitter of various flies that were being tied.  Some flies were received with a lot more enthusiasm than others. Not surprising.  To be honest, that was both fun and exhausting to do.  You should comment, tweet, DM, Instagram message, or just reach out and tell me if you want to see som ..read more
