Thyroid and genetics This International Thyroid Awareness Week the spotlight is on thyroid and genetics! It’s known that genetic factors play a role in some thyroid disorders, particularly in rarer thyroid conditions. For example, one form of congenital hypothyroidism (dyshormonogenesis) results from mutations in one of several genes involved in the production of thyroid hormones. To help the understanding of this we have funded several research studies looking at the genetics of thyroid disorders. This is a selection of the ground-breaking research funded by our BTF Research A ..read more

Karen's story 'I was told I was "too young" for menopause so I asked for investigations into my thyroid.' Back in 2019, I felt my anxiety levels rising and I seemed to be losing weight. After a few months, I went to my GP and they requested some blood tests to check a whole load of things. I was told nothing was wrong, but having checked the results myself online, my TSH level was showing as lower than the normal range (around 0.07) and was flagged as ‘abnormal’ in a bold red font. I queried this with the receptionist and was initially fobbed off. I called the surgery again and insisted ..read more

Thyroid and menopause Thyroid disorders are ten times more common in women than in men. The risk of developing an underactive thyroid also increases with age. So it is not unusual for midlife women going through peri/menopause to also have a thyroid condition. As symptoms often overlap, it can be difficult to establish which are related to the thyroid and which to peri/menopause. We have worked with Prof Annice Mukherjee, consultant endocrinologist with a special interest in menopause, to explore these issues further and provide some answers for midlife women. Jacqui's story 'I had never heard about the thyroxine dose often needing to be reduced after menopause.' I'm 62 and went through the menopause in my early fifties. I had been on the same dose of thyroxine since my thirties, 100mcg per day. I had suffered from hot flushes and sweating for about eight years and just assumed it was menopause. Last summer was particularly bad in the warm weather. I got so sweaty if I exerted myself at all. It was embarrassing to be so sweaty in public, having to mop my face. Even just sitting and having a meal was embarrassing with a sweaty face. I contacted ..read more

Thyroid and menopause What is the thyroid gland? The thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped and is found in the front of your neck. It produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3). Thyroxine is converted by the tissues and organs that need it into the active hormone tri-iodothyronine. In healthy people, the production of these hormones is regulated by the secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland in the brain. Thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism of the body's cells. How do we diagnose thyroid problems? A blood test for thyroid function is perfor ..read more

Alison's story Hormones in a muddle and I’m in a muddle! 'The journey through menopause isn't an easy one but layer in thyroid disease and it certainly makes it more complicated.' This is not the first time I have written a piece from a patient’s perspective. Looking back at my article from 2020, my last words were ‘From time to time my thyroxine dose needs to be adjusted to keep me on the straight and narrow but apart from the looming menopause my hormones seem to be in check for the time being!’ My thyroid journey has been hyperthyroidism and radioactive iodine treatment – as a result, very ..read more
