While shopping for a Bowtie a Buick fit the bill. The 1968 Buick GS 400 checked all the boxes for one lucky owner. Rich Quinn was pretty certain he was in the market for a hot Chevrolet of some kind when he was out poking around looking at cars at a local show about three years ago. But things changed quickly when he saw “the magic words.” “I just saw ‘factory 4-speed’ written on the windshield,” recounts Quinn, a native of Scandinavia, Wis. “It was like a magnet. I had to go look at it!” The car in question was not Chevrolet, but a Buick; a 1968 Gran Sport 400 to be exact. Quinn had his hear ..read more

Nailing down the first 'muscle car'
Old Cars Weekly » Muscle Cars

‘First muscle car’ depends on your point of view Some say the ’49 Olds 88 was the first muscle car. Others give that honor to the ’55 Chrysler C-300 or the 1957 Rambler Rebel. Purists of the bucket-seat, four-speed and “fat tire sect” insist that a ’64 Pontiac GTO was the original muscle car. Still there are others who say the 1936 Buick Century was the granddaddy of them all. Those who know cars will see a pattern here. All of these cars were American-made. They were production vehicles, and most were competitively raced. The ’49 Olds ran in the La Carrera Pan Americana, aka Mexican Road Rac ..read more

Car of the Week: 1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ

1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ is still smoking, and still in the same family. Jim Peterson made a deal with his brother Irving back in 1973 that has worked out pretty well. Irv had a beautiful 1969 Mercury Cyclone CJ 428 that Jim wanted, and Jim somehow convinced his sibling that a ’70 Cyclone would be even better. “He bought it almost new. I fell in love with it myself when he had it and he let me drive it, so that’s how it started. I told him if ever wanted to get rid of it, I wanted it and wanted to keep it in the family,” recalls Jim, a resident of Waupaca, Wis. “Well, the ’70 Cyclone was prett ..read more

Old Cars spotlights a reader submitted 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner. Chris Pena has owned this ’68 Plymouth Roadrunner since 1999. This classic example of Plymouth muscle is a bare bones model with no a/c, an AM radio and bench seat. The car originally came with a 383 c.i.d. under the hood, but Chris upped the cubes with a mildly built 440 c.i.d. With all the torque of the 440, Chris decided to “tub” the rear end for spirited drag racing.
