Over the last month work has continued well on the design of Temptress. We now have the entire boat modelled and a custom hardware kit designed to complement her lines. The driveline has been installed, a V-drive unit will accommodate an Ilmor V8 up to 365hp. We are also looking into suitable powering options for Diesel. Electric propulsion is also an area we are exploring with the design and we are looking at what might be needed within her structure to accommodate this type of system. The Enlarged Cockpit Arrangement Below you can see the new cockpit arrangement. A large open cockpit wit ..read more

Reverse Engineering a Propeller

This project was a great example of how modern technology can be used to reverse engineer obsolete components that are no longer readily available. In this instance Albatross Marine were running low on ‘new old stock’ of propellers that they supply for Albatross boats. They sent me one of their last stock propellers in order to have it reverse engineered and re-produced. Scanning First of all the propeller was 3D scanned. This was done to an accuracy of 0.25mm using a Shining 3D Einscan H, handheld 3D scanner. The 3D scanner is used to take millions of surface measurements to replicate th ..read more

One of the boats that is currently in for restoration at Dan Lee Boatbuilding is a Stapley Falcon named Pisces. This is one of only two boats believed to have been built of this model. Stapley boats were built by Ray Stapley in Sidcup in Kent. Early boats were built from hulls bought from Tremlett boats before Ray started making his own hulls. Stapley and Tremlett boats were extensively raced in Ski and Powerboat racing t ..read more

I am excited to present to you the early stages, and a little preview, of the latest design collaboration between myself and Berryer Design & Manufacturing. Michel Berryer and I have been working together since he helped me with the design of the rudder system utilised on Miss Isle. Since then, among our conversations I had expressed that I would like to put together a design for a new, modernised, classically-styled runabout. I have always leaned towards older designs because I love classic lines, and wood of course. The issue I face with my current approach in recycling old plans and de ..read more
