Today is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, as well as marking a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Alice is going the extra mile for charity that saved her life

Alice Lunn, from Godmanchester, is taking on the Cambridge Half Marathon for Magpas Air Ambulance this Sunday. Alongside her dad, the pair will run the gruelling 13.1 miles—all for the charity that saved Alice’s life four years ago. In 2019, aged just 18, everything changed for Alice when she suffered a respiratory arrest at home one night. Magpas Air Ambulance was called and performed procedures normally only available in a hospital A&E department to try to stabilise her condition, including making a small incision in the side of Alice’s chest. On Friday, 10th February Magpas Air Ambulance staff, clinicians and former patients welcomed HRH The Princess Royal to the site of the charity’s new base, to unveil a cornerstone for the new building which is mid-way through construction. 2022: Our busiest year in four years

Magpas Air Ambulance experienced its busiest year in four years as the charity responded to 1,335 emergencies, across 11 counties in and around the East of England, in 2022. Following the same patterns as recent years, life-threatening medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests remained the number one reason for activation, followed by patients injured in road traffic collisions—accounting for 65% of the service’s emergency call outs combined. Crew members from Cambridgeshire-based charity, Magpas Air Ambulance, and the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) won the 999 Hero category in The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards, which was aired on Channel 4 on Sunday. The nomination came after they brought 13-year-old Daisy Webb back to life after she suffered a cardiac arrest whilst walking to school in Huntingdon earlier this year.
