Construction has the reputation of being an “old-school” industry, and deservedly so. We don’t like change. It’s easy, of course, to do nothing — to be comfortable with the status quo. Yet there is a hefty cost with this mindset. For me, the most important cost is our eroding safety.
Working in construction is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. As I step into a new role serving as the CEO of eMOD, I am committed to fulfilling our mission of sending our workers home safely every single day. To do so, we’re working hard to continuously improve the eMOD ..read more

Creating a safe workspace is of the utmost importance, no matter the industry. And in construction — one of the most dangerous professions in the world — it’s even more important. When it comes to best safety practices at work, it is essential for companies to prioritize preventing safety lapses and other preventable incidents. Some effective ways to take control of the jobsite are performing a job safety analysis (JSA), a pre-task plan (PTP), a daily safety plan, and a safety task assessment (STA). It’s not every day that when you ask someone about their biggest career highlight, the first thing they mention is safety. But that’s exactly what Carlos Zavala did when we spoke to the Fluor superintendent.
Carlos, who’s been working construction for 12 years, was named the eMOD Construction Safety Hero for December – and for good reason. He, nor any of his contractors or sub-contractors that he’s overseen on his projects, have ever had a major safety incident.
“I take pride in having zero major accidents,” he said. “So, I consider that a major achievemen ..read more

Many organizations have an environmental health and safety (EHS) department in place. This department is dedicated solely to environmental protections, occupational health and safety, and safety at work. It also ensures the organization maintains all compliance requirements to standards affiliated with the work they are doing. While EHS is a small component of operating a business, it needs to be managed properly to mitigate costly risks and to ensure compliance is met.
Yet, many companies find that EHS management isn’t a priority until there is a problem, especially as it relates to complian ..read more

Construction safety compliance is a necessary part of our work — and an important part of my job role as superintendent. The most important aspect of being compliant is completing safety documentation — from daily pre-task plans, site-specific job hazard analysis, and project orientations to company-level protocols.
In the event of a safety incident, these documents provide OSHA, insurance executives, and any safety professionals the picture of all activity and precautions taken on the construction site. Additionally, these documents will showcase the level of responsib ..read more

Working in construction can be like a juggling act — except that the act of dropping one ball can have dire consequences. You face intense pressure to get your job done quickly. You are held responsible to do high-quality work. And, at the end of the day, you and your crew need to go home safely.
Mission Bell foreman Adam McPhillips juggles those three pressures brilliantly, which is why he’s being honored as our November 2021 Construction Safety Hero. The 30-year construction veteran has been building high-end cabinets and doing woodwork for Mission Bell, now part of ..read more
