23 years ago LG put WIFI in a fridge. Anyone enabling the WIFI in their appliances?

I have an LG washer and an LG range that have WIFI. I enabled the WIFI in the dryer since I understood you could create customized cycles. I ended up not using it since it was only a few extra button presses. For the range I never connected it since all it seemed to do it turn on the range remotely. I can't think of any situation where I would want to do that. Also, if you don't connect it to the WIFI it broadcasts its SSID all the time. So I ended up blocking the IP I assigned it from the... 23 years ago LG put WIFI in a fridge. Anyone enabling the WIFI in their appliances ..read more

Questions about vehicle security involving VIN and or FOB hacks

I am seeing a lot of information online and not sure what to believe. Or steps to take to secure MY CAR! I keep reading about VIN and or FOB based thefts but they are never clear about what applies to a particular case. I don't want to read any more articles that conclude by saying park your car in your garage (say you don't have one) or block the car in (only one car) or use the club (clumsy). I also have read articles that say to use a faraday cage or block your VIN and then goes on to... Questions about vehicle security involving VIN and or FOB hacks ..read more

Why do UK wall electrical outlets have switches?

I travel to the UK fairly often and AC power outlets in the UK almost always have on/off switches (I have been burned by this as I plugged in my phone charger without checking the switch). Yet this is pretty unusual to find in North America. What is the reason that UK outlets have these switches ..read more

How smart wiring / structured wiring your home has evolved in the last decade or so

A good 20 years ago I decided to smart wire my parents home. I had not only the knowledge but also the work experience which helped. Back then it was very common for most family homes to have One TV set with one cable outlet, and maybe a few phone jacks, and that was it. I decided to run Telephone, Coax cable, and Ethernet jacks to almost all of the rooms in the house. Also created a central panel for all the networking gear which housed the switch, coax terminals and phone punch down... Lost Hydro, was surprised to notice my Google Nest 2nd Gen Wired Doorbell still working.

A few months back I purchased and installed the Google nest WIRED doorbell, second gen. I specifically went with the wired model because we live in an area where we normally do not lose our hydro often and I prefer the reliability of a hard wired doorbell as opposed to having to disconnect it to charge it every so often. Fast forward to the march break. one day while making coffee the lights were flickering on and off, then the hydro went out, and I could not enjoy my coffee I was trying... Arlo Wireless Security Camera Discussion

In April I purchased an Arlo Wireless Security System from Best Buy on sale for $499 – the one with 4 cameras. It’s possible to purchase various packages with various numbers of cameras, but I found the 4-pack to be adequate for my needs and a decent value. The current BB price for the system is $599, but it goes on sale occasionally and will probably be on sale again for boxing week. Less expensive in Canada than the US! (Edit - have been on for $399, but offers come and go)... Arlo Wireless Security Camera Discussion ..read more

Pros and cons of a propane stove and other options

I am a happy owner of a GE sealed burner natural gas stove (last 10 years). However, we will be moving this summer and I am considering my appliance options at the new place. Just wondering if anyone has any advice on the options. For starters there is no natural gas so that option is out. My second option is a rented propane tank and conversion of my existing stove (I have the adapter kit). This would avoid having to buy yet another appliance. But I still have the cost of installation. I... Pros and cons of a propane stove and other options ..read more

How Many Switches, Lights, Receptacles on One 15Amp Circuit?

Hey Folks yesterday I was checking the electrical panel and I found out that 15amp circle connect to 5 receptacles in the living room and 25 lights totally is 30 lights and receptacles, as my understanding in the Canadian Electrical Code the max is only 12 receptacles and lights. note, all the lights are LED and every five pot lights under one switch. Do I need to count the switches or the lights because if it's a switch then it's 6 switches and 5 receptacles total is 11. If it's not... I am looking for an affordable home security camera that meets the following criteria: (1) Battery Powered (2) Ability to view on PC (i.e., not requiring an iOS or Android app) (3) No subscription fees I was interested in the Wyze Outdoor v2, but it appears that viewing is only available through the Wyze iOS or Android app. Perhaps there is a work-around, but I don't want to get into third-party extensions or flaky configurations.
