My Top 10 Locations to Photograph In and Around Dayton, Ohio

Every time I plan a vacation, one of the first things I look for is a list of locations to photograph. I scour websites, instagram accounts and tags, and guide books, if there are any. About 13 years ago, I returned to my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. I left, gladly left, and planned to never return. But life and careers opportunities ended up drawing me back to the area, and, despite initial hesitation, I have loved living in my city. There is so much I missed growing up here, and so much has changed since I left (I was gone for over 10 years). My hope is that with this list, I can help others wh ..read more

The Ups and Downs of Photography (and Life)

My booth this past weekend. I have ridden exactly 4 rollercoasters in my life. I hate them. My fear of heights has kept me as far away from them as I could, and I really don’t enjoy any part of them at all. And yet, life often feels more like a rollercoaster than I would like. At least that’s the metaphor I’ve found to be most accurate. Things go well, things go wrong, things go well again, they smooth out, and then drop and raise…and continues like that over and over. It really feels like that if you are starting a business or trying to make it in an artistic field. A few months ago, I start ..read more

My Favorite Images of 2021...Part 2

Welcome to part of 2 of My Favorite Images of 2021. I am doing it this way because I despise basing things on how many times someone else has “liked” my images…though I want people to like them, and because calling something my “best” image is so subjective. But I also can’t limit myself to just one image a month. I like the images I take. So here we go on part 2 April For some reason, the spring was a slow period for me. As you will see, I had an amazing fall, but spring, not so much. I really enjoyed my time joining up with Jeremy and Doug. We met up at Caesar’s Creek to photograph the ..read more

Thanks for joining me for the first 3 parts of this series. If you haven’t seen them, you can find them just prior to this post. The Fall of 2021 was an amazing time for me. I felt like I was in a groove. I was finding wildlife and landscapes to shoot, choosing great locations, and being inspired and productive. And a major part of it all started with a major disappointment. September September started out in a rush and flurry of activity. I was preparing to have a booth at the Dayton Art Institute Oktoberfest, and that requires a ton of work. But I wanted to get out and photograph ..read more

Thanks for joining me for my third installment of my favorite images of 2021 and the stories behind them. I’m not trying to drag this out, but wanted to spend some time getting back into blogging, and also revisiting my past year of photography. This past summer and fall have been some of the most exciting photography of my life. I visited a few new places and been able to see and experience things I never have in the past. I stepped out of my comfort zone and travelled on my own, completely alone, spending nights in my truck in the middle of nowhere…just to be part of some amazing moments. Ju ..read more

It is that time of year where everyone posts their top 9 Instagram posts or their “Best of…” lists. Neither of these are worthwhile to me. The images that gets the most likes on Instagram and Facebook is irrelevant if you are doing photography for you. Who cares what other people think? Of course you want people to like your images, but the most meaningful and powerful images will often not get the most likes. And, as my friend Jeremy Mudd points out, choosing a best is really subjective. My idea of best and your idea of best differs and we might both be wrong (and we probably are). So I decid ..read more

Working with Luminar 4

I have been using Luminar since I first got back into photography. I didn’t feel I could afford paying the monthly fee for Lightroom as a new photographer, and the recommendations for Luminar along with the one time fee was good as a starter program. I quickly realized Luminar was more than a “starter” editing program. It was rather robust, and getting better with every improvement. I requested being an affiliate because I really liked the program. I now use Lightroom alongside Luminar, but Luminar can easily stand alone as an editing program. For those who want to avoid the monthly fee of Lig ..read more
