Like every classic debate, there’s an A versus B. Ketchup or mustard? Apple or Android? Team Sonic or Team Mario? Cats or dogs? Spring or summer? The list goes on. Why You Should Scan Your Vintage Pictures In a busy world, convenience and cost are king and queen. What’s that mean? It means that using a smartphone or di ..read more

10 Things You Might Not Know about 35mm Slides

If you’ve read any of my blogs about slides before, you’ll know that I’m not a fan. Between the hassle of a projector and the unreliability of the lamp, I just can’t think of many good reasons why slides ever existed at all. Some might say, “Well, Christian, they were great for classrooms! You could show pictures to the whole class at the same time!”  My response? “Yeah, theoretically, but I literally never saw a slide projector work like they were supposed to.” Seriously. Every time I saw a teacher try to show slides in class, the projector wouldn’t work, the slides got jammed, the l ..read more

There are two types of people in this world. Those that do everything in their power to not let the summer sun slip through their fingers, and those that turn to their closets for jackets and boots at the first hint of a cool breeze. For the latter peeps, it means fall is here and so is Halloween season.   And before anyone tells you otherwise, if it’s okay to start decorating for Christmas in November, then it’s okay to start decorating for Halloween in September.   So, go hit up your local Spirit Halloween store, boys and ghouls, and let’s get to decorating for spooky szn with some ..read more

Can I Record Over My Old Cassette Tapes?
Southtree Artifact Blog

Remember cassette tapes? Those plastic rectangles that we used to fast-forward and rewind through in search of our artists’ favorite tracks. Yeah, we don’t remember them either. Just kidding, of course, we do!   Cassette tapes were actually pretty dang great. They offered us the first opportunity to take the music of our choice on the go with us. Thank you, Sony Walkman. They also gave us the beauty of the mixtape. The holy grail gift for your grade school crush. You know, that perfect way to tell him/her how you felt without actually telling them anything at all. Just having your favorit ..read more

I’m a big believer in mail. Not email, not texts, not Snapchats – mail. There’s something special about writing a letter, putting it in an envelope, sealing it, putting it in the mailbox, flipping up the flag, and watching the mail person pick it up and take it away. Legally, you’re probably opening yourself up to liability by creating a paper trail, but as long as you’re not talking about robbing Fort Knox, it’s probably fine to send a letter with the USPS every once in a while. Not to mention, how awesome is it when you’re the surprise recipient of a letter? You feel like the President of ..read more

Let’s imagine there’s someone you know. They spend all their time talking about how great they are. They tell you about how they saved a little kitten in the gutter from being swept away in a flash flood. They yammer incessantly about how many books they’ve read, famous people they’ve met, and countries they’ve visited. They won’t shut up about the time they single-handedly stopped a runaway train from falling off the end of a bridge with webs they slung out of their own arms. Wait, maybe that last one was Spiderman. The point is you can only hear someone talk about themselves for so long be ..read more

The Inner Workings of A Betamax Tape

Most people these days don’t know what a Betamax tape is. Heck, most people don’t know what a video tape is at all. With all the new technology these days, storage is invisible. You hop on Google Drive and everything’s saved to the cloud. You don’t even see where your data’s saved, because it’s sitting on some server in a giant warehouse somewhere in the middle of the Arizona desert. Not so with Betamax. When you had a Betamax tape, your video was saved on an actual giant box that you put into a big receiver. Betamax was an O.G. video format back before Netflix was even a gleam in any of ou ..read more
